Carl Leberecht Crusius
Carl Leberecht Crusius (born May 9, 1740 in Langenhessen , † February 10, 1779 in Leipzig ) was a German engraver and illustrator . He is counted to the second generation of the Leipzig rococo copper engravers on the border with classicism.
He is the son of the master and pastor Gottlieb Crusius (1688–1754) and Regina Elisabeth, b. Conrad. His brothers are the engraver Gottlieb Leberecht Crusius (1730–1804) and the publisher Siegfried Leberecht Crusius (1738–1824). It is considered difficult to distinguish the graphic works of the brothers, as not all representations are signed. However, some bear the signature "C Crusius f".
Among other things, Crusius made copper engravings as illustrations for books by his brother's publishing house.
In 1768 "Das Landleben" by Christian Cay Lorenz Hirschfeld appears , which contains the artist's first book illustrations. The book is so successful that further editions followed in 1771 and 1776, for which Crusius reworked the vignettes.
His best-known works include the vignettes for Leopold Friedrich Günther von Goeckingk's Songs of Two Lovers (Weidmanns Erben and Reich, Leipzig 1777).
His family list is contained in the family list of his great-great-grandfather Balthasar Crusius .
