He coached the Seahawks quarterbacks between 2001 and 2007 before being hired by the Washington Redskins as head coach in 2008 .

After his release in 2009, he worked as a quarterback coach for the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs . Since 2020 he has been head coach of the Seattle Dragons in the newly founded XFL .

Childhood and youth

Anger grew up in Cerritos , California . He played college football at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona .

NFL

Dallas Cowboys

Zorn was hired by the Dallas Cowboys in 1975 as an undrafted free agent . He came into the main squad, but was later fired to make room for running back Preston Pearson .

Seattle Seahawks

On January 8, 1976, he was hired as a free agent by the newly formed Seattle Seahawks . There he became starting quarterback and worked with his favorite pass recipient , Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Steve Largent . Largent was the first to be inducted into the Seattle Seahawks Ring of Honor (1989), Zorn was the second (1991). Zorn was named AFC Offensive Rookie of the Year by the National Football League Players Association and MVP of the Seahawks in his first season for throwing twelve touchdown passes and four touchdowns himself. At the same time he threw 27 interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 49.4.

He was replaced by Dave Krieg in 1983 , the year the Seahawks first moved into the play-offs . Zorn was a substitute quarterback until the end of the 1984 season. Zorn was also known as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks of its time. He was therefore often referred to as the "left-handed Fran Tarkenton ". In 2008, he was named the eighth best dual-threat quarterback of all time by NFL.com.

Green Bay Packers and Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Green Bay Packers signed Zorn in 1985 as a second quarterback. The Packers finished second in NFC Central and missed the play-offs. In the off-season Zorn was released from the Packers and then went as a backup quarterback in the Canadian Football League to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers , but left the team after a game played.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Resignation

Zorn returned to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987 . He played one game during the 1987 NFL Strike before officially stepping down. The Buccaneers ended the season with only four wins and therefore missed the play-offs.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Zorn returned to college football as an assistant coach. He got his first job at Boise State University , where he coached the quarterbacks from 1988 to 1991. He then took up the position of offensive coordinator for Utah State University , which he held from 1992 to 1994, before he was again coach of the quarterbacks at the University of Minnesota .

Zorn moved to the National Football League in 1997 when he took up a position with the Seattle Seahawks as coach of the quarterbacks. He spent three seasons with the Detroit Lions between 1998 and 2000 as coach of the quarterbacks. In 2001 he returned to Seattle as a quarterback coach. There he trained, among others, Matt Hasselbeck , who set several franchise records.

After the head coach of the Washington Redskins Joe Gibbs resigned in January 2008, owner Daniel Snyder Zorn hired as offensive coordinator of the Redskins and promoted him on February 10, 2008 in addition to the new head coach. He became the fourth head coach that Snyder had hired since he bought the franchise in 1999. In week 2 of the 2008 season , Zorn won his first game as head coach 29:24 against the New Orleans Saints . In week 4, Zorn became the Redskins' first head coach, beating rival Dallas Cowboys in his first game at Texas Stadium . Zorn changed the Redskins' attacking game by introducing a high-contact running game and a modification of the West Coast Offense , a combination that earned the Redskins the eighth strongest running game (130.9 yards per game). Zorn led his team to 6 wins and 2 losses in the first half of the season, but ended with only 8 wins and 8 losses after a weak second half of the season. Nevertheless, four offensive players from the Redskins were nominated for the Pro Bowl .

After six games in the 2009 season , of which only two could be won, the Washington Redskins relieved anger of its double burden by hiring Sherman Lewis as offensive coordinator. On January 4, 2010, Zorn was released from the Redskins. The Redskins never made it into the play-offs under him as head coach . He was replaced by former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan . In several interviews, Zorn expressed his disappointment with the handling of his release.

Former player Clinton Portis suspected in a 2015 radio interview that Zorn's failure was due to his coaching style. This was based too heavily on the Christian faith, which would have meant that he lost the support and trust of the team.

After two seasons as head coach, Zorn was hired by the Baltimore Ravens to train the quarterbacks in 2010 . Under anger, quarterback Joe Flacco achieved the most touchdowns (25) and the highest quarterback rating (93.6), as well as the fewest interceptions (10) of his career. On January 27, 2011, Zorn was released from the Ravens. In 2011 he was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs to coach the quarterbacks and stayed there until 2012.

In February 2019 he was introduced as the first head coach for the XFL team from Seattle ( Seattle Dragons ). The league started playing in 2020.

Personal

Zorn is married and has three daughters and one son. He and his wife are involved in the organizations Medical Teams International and Pro Athletes Outreach .

Zorn is interested in mountain biking , kayaking and other outdoor sports and rides a mountain bike himself. When he was a gamer with the Seattle Seahawks, he experimented with building off-road bikes with the help of the owner of the Mercer Island Cyclery . Zorn was inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame on November 23, 2008.
