Gary Wayne Kubiak (* 15. August 1961 in Houston , Texas ) is an American American football trainer and former poker players. Kubiak won the Super Bowl three times as assistant coach and once as head coach . He is currently Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Advisor for the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL . As a player, he was active in the position of quarterback .

Early years

Kubiak went to St. Pius X High School in Houston , Texas , which he left in 1978. He went to Texas A&M University .

Player career

Kubiak was selected in the 1983 NFL draft in the eighth round as 197th player by the Denver Broncos , where he was intended as a backup quarterback for John Elway , which he remained until his player career end in 1991.

Coaching career

Kubiak first trained the running backs at Texas A&M University from 1992 to 1993 before signing a contract with the NFL . In 1994 he was quarterback coach with the San Francisco 49ers , where he looked after Steve Young and won the Super Bowl XXIX . In 1995 he became offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Denver Broncos . Here he won the Super Bowl twice ( XXXII , XXXIII ). From the 2003 season he was only offensive coordinator. He stayed until 2005. From the 2006 season he signed a contract as head coch with the Houston Texans , where he inherited Don Capers . In his first season as head coach, he was last in the AFC South . In the next two years he was able to achieve eight wins out of eight defeats. In the 2009 season, Kubiak led the Texans to a season of more wins than losses (9-7) for the first time in franchise history . However, they missed the playoffs in the playoff against the New York Jets . A year later, due to a miserable defense, he was only third with the Texans in AFC South. In 2011 he finished first in the AFC South. He won the first playoff game in franchise history with 31-10 against the Cincinnati Bengals . The following year, he again set a franchise record, ending the season with 12 wins and 4 losses. In the playoffs, he defeated the Cincinnati Bengals again, before losing to the New England Patriots a round later with 41-28. On November 3, 2013, Kubiak collapsed on the pitch in the game against the Indianapolis Colts . He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack . On December 6, 2013, Kubiak was fired by the Houston Texans. This season he had only two wins after 13 games. In 2014 he was hired by the Baltimore Ravens as an offensive coordinator. On January 18, 2015, he was hired as head coach of the Denver Broncos, where he won the AFC and Super Bowl 50 in his first season .

On January 1, 2017, he resigned from his coaching position for health reasons.

He has been with the Minnesota Vikings since January 2019 in an advisory capacity as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Advisor.

As head coach he drove 82 wins out of 75 defeats.

Kubiak is married and has three sons.
