Pierre Repellini (born October 27, 1950 in Hyères ) is a former French football player and coach and current official of the French football coaches union. He spent all of his professional time as a player at AS Saint-Étienne and played four times for his country's national team.

As a player in the club

Repellini grew up in the town of Hyères in the south of France and played football in his youth at the FC Hyères located there , with the 173 centimeter tall player initially being a striker . In 1969 he was discovered by the talent scout Pierre Garonnaire and he was able to convince him to switch to the youth department of the professional club AS Saint-Étienne. With Albert Batteux it was the coach of the first team who moved the technically very talented and aggressive player to switch from attack to full defense . However, from then on he remained versatile and in some cases also played in midfield and in attack. Batteux enabled him in the course of the 1970/71 season to be included in the first division team, for which the then 20-year-old could debut on December 13, 1970 in an encounter against AS Nancy . Despite numerous well-known competitors, he ran nine times for a team that took second place in the table by the end of the season.

In the 1971/72 season he became an integral part of the team and was regularly called up, although he was not given a permanent place. The young player also played his first two games in European competition against 1. FC Köln , even if his team was unable to qualify for the next round. In 1973 he finally made the breakthrough and formed part of the defensive chain alongside Oswaldo Piazza , Gérard Farison and Alain Merchadier . This allowed with 40 goals conceded fewer than the defenders of all other teams and thus made their contribution to winning the 1974 championship, which was Repellini's first national title of his career. This was crowned by entering the national cup final in 1974 , in which the player was also on the field and thanks to a 2-1 victory against AS Monaco also won this trophy. Subsequently, the young talent challenged Gérard Janvion Repellini. Therefore, he was no longer completely undisputed, but was still regularly called up and thus made his contribution to the defense of the league title, which succeeded in 1975. In addition, in the cup final in 1975 there was the chance of a second double success in the cup and championship in a row. This succeeded with a 2-0 win against RC Lens , but Repellini was not on the pitch in the final. The third championship title in a row followed in 1976 and also made it into the final of the 1975/76 European Cup . He was called up for this, but had to bury hopes of a possible international title with a 0-1 defeat against FC Bayern Munich . Nevertheless, he and his teammates were invited to a reception by then President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in recognition of their achievements in European competition .

After 1976, Saint-Étienne could not build on its successful streak in the league, but made the leap to the national cup final in 1977 . Repellini had to watch one more time when his colleagues claimed the trophy for themselves with a 2-1 win against Stade Reims . Since he still did not have a permanent place in the back team, he was allowed to try his old position in the storm during the 1977/78 season when Hervé Revelli , who was actually playing there, suffered a crisis. When Piazza turned his back on the club in 1979, Repellini was able to take over its place on the defensive. One last successful year followed, in which he presented himself for the last time on the European stage and was third in the table with the team. In 1980, the then 29-year-old ended his professional career after 190 top division games with 13 goals, which he played exclusively for Saint-Étienne, and returned to his home country for the third-class FC Hyères. This was followed in 1983 by a move to Olympique Saint-Maximin , for which he competed until he finally gave up playing football in 1986.

National team

On September 8, 1973 Repellini made his debut at the age of 22 in a 3-1 win against Greece for the French national team . He was then used regularly until he played his fourth and last international match on May 18, 1974 in a 0-1 win against Argentina. He was able to book all appearances in his country's jersey in the season of his first championship.

Coaching and functionary career

Immediately after he stopped playing football in 1986, he was hired as head of the youth department at his former club Saint-Étienne. He kept the post until he went to third division AS Lyon-Duchère in 1991 and took over as coach. In 1992 he found employment with the second division Red Star Paris as an assistant coach, as which he assisted his former teammate and coach Robert Herbin . In the 1994/95 season he was promoted to head coach and stayed in office until he was dismissed in 1996 for lack of athletic success. In 1997 he returned to Saint-Étienne, where he worked as a coach with Robert Herbin. With the now only second class club, he almost relegated at the end of the 1997/98 season, which is why he had to leave the club again. Together with Jean-Luc Girard , he took over his former employer Red Star Paris, which had slipped into the third division in 1999. In 2000 he moved to the club's youth center before returning to coach the first team in January 2001. However, he could not save this from relegation, so he gave up the office in the summer of 2001.

In 2002 Repellini became vice-president of the national coaches union UNECATEF . From then on he remained in this post for many years.
