Philip Rivers (* 8. December 1981 in Decatur , Alabama ) is an American American football poker players. He plays as a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He has played for the Indianapolis Colts since the 2020 season . From 2004 to 2019 he was under contract with the San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers.

NFL draft

After Rivers successfully played college football for the North Carolina State University team, he was considered one of the top three quarterbacks in the 2004 NFL Draft alongside Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger . The first draft pick of the year was the San Diego Chargers, who wanted to pick Eli Manning. Manning announced in advance that he did not want to play in San Diego. Even so, Eli Manning was the first player drafted by the Chargers. Behind the scenes, however, an exchange deal was made with the New York Giants . The Giants selected Philip Rivers in fourth position of the draft and gave him and three other draft picks in exchange for Eli Manning to the Chargers.

This swap on the day of the draft is still controversial among experts. With the exchanged draft picks, the Chargers were able to draft other stars such as linebacker Shawne Merriman and kicker Nate Kaeding and thus laid the foundation for a successful future. Rivers was also elected to the Pro Bowl in 2006. Eli Manning, however, played error-prone in his early years and was only nominated for the Pro Bowl in 2008. In the 2007 season he reached the Super Bowl with the New York Giants . The most successful first-round quarterback of the 2004 NFL Draft, however, can be considered Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers , who won the Super Bowl in his second season.

Professional career

In his first season in 2004, Rivers joined the team late after lengthy contract negotiations and was therefore rarely used. Starting quarterback Drew Brees also played the best season of his career to date, so Rivers had little chance of ousting him. In 2005, Rivers had to be content with the role as a backup. Brees' contract was not extended after the 2005 season, instead he signed a high-value contract with the New Orleans Saints . This made Rivers a starter, and despite initial doubts, he was able to convince in his first full season in 2006. The Chargers, led by Rivers and running back LaDainian Tomlinson , achieved the best result of all NFL teams with 14 wins and only two losses. In the divisional play-offs they had to admit defeat to the New England Patriots . Also in 2007 Rivers reached the play-offs with the Chargers and advanced to the final of the American Football Conference (AFC), where they lost again to the Patriots. Rivers played despite a knee injury and had to undergo surgery soon after the game.

At the beginning of the 2008 season, the Chargers were among the top favorites for a Super Bowl victory, and many experts reckoned that Rivers would be one of the extended MVP candidates. Rivers' season was excellent, with a quarterback rating of 105.5 and 34 touchdowns , leading the NFL in these categories. The Chargers season, however, was nowhere near as successful, and the San Diego team moved into the play-offs with a last-minute win over the Denver Broncos , where they were able to impressively defeat the Indianapolis Colts . But in the Divisional Round they failed at the eventual Super Bowl winner, the Pittsburgh Steelers , with 25:34.

The Southern California team was also one of the favorites in 2009, and like 2008 they started the season relatively poorly. Two wins faced three losses, but the Chargers won all of their eleven remaining games and ended the season with a 13-3 record. Rivers was at the top of the statistics again and threw 29 touchdowns with only nine interceptions and again posted an excellent rating of 104.4.

Due to the long winning streak, the Chargers automatically reached the Divisional Round of the play-offs, where they lost to the New York Jets just under 14:17. Rivers threw and ran a touchdown, but he also made two critical interceptions.

On November 2, 2012, the 9th day of the 2012 season, he won 18 successful passes in 20 attempts when he beat the Kansas City Chiefs (31:13). Only five other players were able to pass at least 90% successfully in at least 20 attempts: Kurt Warner 2009 (92.3%), Vinny Testaverde 1993 (91.3%), Ken Anderson 1974 (90.9%), Lynn Dickey 1981 (90 , 5%) and Steve Young 1991 (90.0%).

Following the 2019 season , in which the team clearly missed the play-offs with a balance of 5-11, the Chargers announced that they would not extend Rivers' expiring contract, so that Rivers became a free agent at the beginning of the 2020 season has been. Rivers then signed a $ 25 million one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts in March .

Rivers was elected to the Pro Bowl eight times in his career .

Private life

Rivers has been married to his wife Tiffany since 2001, and they have nine children together. He is a devout Catholic and lived chaste before his marriage .
