college

Merriman played for the University of Maryland and was selected twelfth in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers in the first round. This draft right actually belonged to the New York Giants , but they had swapped the right to the San Diego Chargers the year before to sign Eli Manning , who refused to play for San Diego. The New York Giants exchanged their first round picks in 2004 (4th place) and 2005 (12th place) and the Chargers were able to strengthen themselves with quarterback Philip Rivers and Shawne Merriman.

NFL

In his rookie season, in which he was named NFL Rookie of the Year , he recorded 57 tackles and ten sacks , and he was also voted into the Pro Bowl in his first year . At the beginning of the 2006 season, he tested positive for steroids and had to serve a four-game ban on doping. Despite this failure, he had 62 tackles and 17 sacks at the end of the season, which were the most in the NFL. He finished the 2007 regular season with 68 tackles and 12.5 sacks. In the 2007 season he was with the Chargers in the play-offs , which defeated the Tennessee Titans 17: 6 in the first round . Due to a loss in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots , they could not move into Super Bowl XLII .

In the first game of the 2008 NFL season, he tore a cruciate ligament and then missed the rest of the season. His comeback in the 2009 season was plagued by many minor injuries and so he was never able to continue his performance before the cruciate ligament rupture and only booked four sacks. His last season with the Chargers was not much better, after a holdout, which he hoped for a better paid contract, he was thrown back by injuries and was only a supplementary player with the Chargers.

The Chargers fired Merriman during the season on November 3, 2010, and he was signed by the Buffalo Bills the following day.

On March 10, 2013, he announced his retirement from the NFL on his website.
