Melvin Gordon III (born April 13, 1993 in Kenosha , Wisconsin ) is an American football player in the position of running back . He plays for the Denver Broncos in the National Football League (NFL). From 2015 to 2019 he worked for the San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers .
college
Gordon played for the University of Wisconsin in the US college league for four years . In his college career, he achieved a total of 49 touchdowns and 5,143 yards . Gordon was particularly successful in his senior year in Wisconsin. With 2,587 yards run and 29 touchdowns in the running game, he was the most successful running back in both categories of the 2014 NCAA season. Gordon received several awards for his outstanding performance in 2014.
NFL
Chargers
Gordon was selected as the 15th player by the Chargers in the first round in the 2015 NFL Draft . In the 2015 NFL Draft he was the second-highest elected running back, only Todd Gurley was drafted earlier by the St. Louis Rams in this position . In his rookie season, Gordon was a starter for the Chargers. However, he did not make his breakthrough until the 2016 NFL season . After he couldn't score a single touchdown for his team in 2015 , his values improved significantly in the 2016 season. Gordon scored 12 touchdowns for the Chargers and ran 997 yards. For his performances in the 2016 season, Gordon was nominated for the Pro Bowl because Le'Veon Bell was out due to injury.
In the 2017 season , his third year in the professional league, Gordon broke the 1,000-yard mark for the first time with 1,105 running yards. Like the year before, he scored 12 touchdowns for his team, four of them through the air as a pass recipient. A highlight of his season was an 87-yard touchdown in week eight against the Patriots . Although his third season was even better than the previous season, Gordon didn't make it to the Pro Bowl again. 2018 had another strong year for Gordon, in 12 games for the Chargers he scored 10 touchdowns through the run at 885 yards, he also caught 4 touchdowns. For his individual achievements, Gordon was elected to the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career . In addition, Gordon reached the play-offs with the Chargers for the first time in his career . At the start of the 2019 season, Gordon went on strike unsuccessfully for a new long-term contract and didn't rejoin the team until week 5. With 3.8 yards of space gained per run, he could not build on his performance from the previous season, and he was increasingly replaced by Austin Ekeler , who successfully replaced him in his absence and was able to prove himself as an equivalent weapon even after Gordon returned. Ultimately, Gordon ran 612 yards and scored 8 touchdowns through the run during the season.
Denver Broncos
For the 2020 season , Gordon agreed on a two-year contract with the Denver Broncos for a salary of more than 16 million US dollars. This represents a solid deal for Gordon, but the pre-season strike was not financially worthwhile for Gordon, as he had rejected a longer-term contract the previous year and asked for more with the Chargers. At the Broncos he should play alongside running back Phillip Lindsay and relieve him.
