The Doak Walker Award is a prize for the best running back in college football . Awarded since 1990, it is named after Doak Walker , a former Southern Methodist University (SMU) American football player in college football and the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).

The nominees are judged not only on their skills on the field, but also on their academic performance.

The winner is presented with a bronze statue of Doak Walker, which is attached to a wooden base. It was designed by Blair Buswell , who also busted more than a dozen members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
