The 1970 NFL season was the 51st season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 18, 1970 and ended on December 20, 1970. The season ended with the Pro Bowl on January 24, 1971 at the LA Coliseum in Los Angeles , California .
history
It was the first NFL season after the merger of the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL).
League reorganization
At the time of the merger, 16 teams were playing in the NFL and 10 in the AFL. Two conferences were formed from the two leagues. The NFL became the National Football Conference (NFC) and the AFL became the American Football Conference (AFC). In order to correct the imbalance in the number of teams, the former NFL teams Baltimore Colts , Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers moved to the AFC.
The conferences were divided into three divisions. The East Divisions consisted of five teams while the Central and West Divisions each consisted of four teams.
The two divisions of the Eastern Conference of the NFL were merged to form NFC East. The New Orleans Saints switched to the new NFC West. This was formed from the Coastal Division of the Western Conference. The previous Central Division was renamed the NFC Central Division.
In the AFC, the East Division was formed from the former Eastern Division of the AFL. The Baltimore Colts from the NFL were added, while the Houston Oilers moved to the Central Division. The AFC West was formed from the teams of the Western Division of the AFL. The Cincinnati Bengals moved to the Central Division. This also consisted of the two previous NFL teams, the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The aim was to achieve balanced divisions and not to arrange the teams geographically.
Television broadcast
Starting September 21, 1970, an NFL game was regularly broadcast as part of Monday Night Football in prime-time television.
