description

The Superdome is a steel frame construction with a dome made of a steel lattice shell , which stands on a reinforced concrete building, which with its rectangular floor plan forms a large base for the round Superdome and the access areas to its eight entrances.

Because of the high groundwater level, all parts of the building had to be erected above ground. The playing area and the movable lower grandstand are located at street level. They are surrounded by the three-story reinforced concrete building, which mainly consists of parking garages.

On top of this building is the 38 m (125  ft ) high steel frame building with six levels for the main lobby, the entrances to the three auditoriums and the numerous function rooms. The first two levels have a floor plan in the form of your rounded rectangle and thus protrude slightly below the ring-shaped structure of the upper levels. Its exterior view is determined by the 96 K-shaped pillars of the roof dome, which are clad with anodized aluminum sheet .

The dome is 207.3 m (680 ft) in diameter and its center is 83.2 m (273 ft) above the playing surface. The dome was designed as a lattice shell of 2.2 m (7 ft. 3 in.) High, diamond-shaped steel profiles and covered with sheet steel, 2.54 cm (1  inch ) thick foam insulation and 2.5 cm thick, white elastomer film . The underside of the dome is covered with an acoustic ceiling.

The dome rests on a 2.7 m (9 ft) high steel ring that carries its vertical and horizontal loads. To the side below this ring is a 2.7 m (9 ft) wide and 1.2 m (4 ft) deep drainage canal, which can absorb and divert the water masses draining from the large domed roof when it rains. The dome with its steel ring and drainage channel is supported by the 96 K-pillars.

The building was designed by the local architects Curtis and Davis, the structure and dome were designed by Sverdrup & Parcel .

Hurricane Katrina

The Superdome hit the headlines when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in August 2005 . The Superdome served as an emergency shelter during this time . The original plan was to accommodate around 10,000 people there for a maximum of 48 hours on August 28, 2005. However, more than three times as many people lived under inhumane conditions in the venue for around a week. Parts of the roof were covered during the hurricane , toilets did not work and food supplies became scarce. Several evacuation attempts had to be canceled because people resisted with violence. Finally, on September 4th of that year, the Superdome was completely evacuated.

On September 25, 2006, the Superdome reopened after a complete renovation (cost: 185 million US dollars) with the football game of the New Orleans Saints against the Atlanta Falcons .

As early as 1998, the Superdome was used as accommodation during the less devastating Hurricane Georges .

Surname

In October 2011, Mercedes-Benz USA secured the naming rights to the arena for ten years with a sponsorship agreement . It was renamed the Mercedes-Benz Superdome .
