He played college football for the University of Georgia before playing for the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos in the National Football League (NFL). He has been elected to the Pro Bowl twelve times, more than any other cornerback, and is considered one of the best cornerbacks of all time.

NFL

His professional football career began in 1999 when he was selected by the Washington Redskins as the seventh player in the first round of the NFL Draft . He played for the Redskins until the 2003 season. After that season he joined the Denver Broncos for Clinton Portis , along with a second round draft pick .

Bailey was elected to the Pro Bowl every year from 2000 to 2007 . In the play-off game against the New England Patriots on January 14, 2006, he set the NFL record for the longest interception return without subsequent points. He caught a pass from New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in his own end zone and carried it back over 100 yards to the opposing 1-yard line.

In the 2013 season he was only used in five games and the playoffs due to many injuries. He took part in his first Super Bowl where he got four tackles in the 43: 8 loss to the Seattle Seahawks . On May 6, 2014, he was released from the Broncos.

On April 4, 2014, he signed with the New Orleans Saints a two year contract for 7 million US dollars . However, he missed the jump to the 53-man squad and was released on August 30, 2014.

On October 28, 2014, Bailey announced the end of his career.
