NFL
In 1997, Barber was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round in 66th place in the NFL Draft . His first year with the Tampa team was disappointing for him, he was only used in one game. In the second year he received significantly more time from his head coach Tony Dungy and played in all 16 games of the season. His speed and his catch safety made him a regular place. In 2001 he was able to intercept ten passes in the regular season - that meant a season record. He was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time after the season .
In 2002 Barber had to contend with numerous injuries. Even so, he was voted NFC Defensive Player of the Week that season, the best defensive player in the National Football Conference (NFC) in one game week. With him, the Buccaneers moved into the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles in the same year under their new head coach Jon Gruden . Four seconds before the end of the game, Barber was able to intercept a pass from Donovan McNabb and carry it back over 92 yards into the opposing end zone for a touchdown . The Buccaneers won by 27:10 and moved into the Super Bowl . In Super Bowl XXXVII they defeated the Oakland Raiders (Head Coach: Bill Callahan , Quarterback Rich Gannon ) with their quarterback Brad Johnson with 48:21.
In 2005, Barber became the first cornerback in NFL history to score 20 interceptions and 20 sacks in his career . Only eight defense lawyers had succeeded in this before him . Barber was able to achieve 108 tackles in the 2006 season, intercept three passes and fend off 20 passes. He was re-elected to the Pro Bowl.
In 2012 he moved from the position of cornerback to that of free safety . He blocked 13 passes, scored 91 tackles, caught four interceptions for 160 yards, and forced a fumble and a blocked punt .
On May 8, 2013, he announced his resignation.
