Edgerrin James (born on 1. August 1978 in Immokalee , Florida ) is a former American American football poker players in the position of running backs . He played college football for the University of Miami before being selected fourth by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL Draft . In his eleven-year professional career, he also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks , was voted NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in his first year and in four Pro Bowls .
Career
college
James attended the University of Miami and became one of the most successful running backs in the history of that university. He is the only Miami Hurricanes player to have run for more than 1,000 yards in two consecutive seasons and has had the most games with more than 100 yards (14). Overall, he ranks third in the total number of yards in the history of the Hurricanes. In 2009 he was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame .
NFL
Indianapolis Colts
James was ranked fourth by the Indianapolis Colts selected and signed shortly after a seven-year contract for 49 million dollars . Critics said the Colts should have chosen reigning Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams over James , but the decision turned out to be the right one.
James silenced the critics by performing immediately and being named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year . In addition, he ran the most yards of all running backs in his first two seasons and thus won the "NFL rushing title" twice. In 2001 he tore his cruciate ligament and fell out for a long time. In the following season he was unable to build on the strong performances shown and his career seemed to be thwarted. However, he showed his class again from 2003 and ran more than 1500 yards in 2004 and 2005.
In 2006 he left the Colts as their record holder in run yards (9,226). In the same season, Indianapolis won Super Bowl XLI and they still presented James with a Super Bowl ring. In 2012, James was inducted into the Indianapolis Ring of Honor .
Arizona Cardinals
James signed a four-year $ 30 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals on March 23, 2006. In the next two seasons he ran over 1000 yards. In 2008, Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt initially only used him as a blocker and he only had 20 attempts to run over a span of ten games. Even before the play-offs , he announced that he would not return to the Cardinals after the season despite an ongoing contract. The team reached Super Bowl XLII , but lost 23-27 to the Pittsburgh Steelers . In April 2009, his longtime girlfriend and mother of his children died of cancer, whereupon he asked the Cardinals to fire him.
Seattle Seahawks
In August 2009, he signed a $ 2 million one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks and only joined the team after training camp. James played seven games and only ran 125 yards, after which he was released by the Seahawks on November 3rd.
On July 26, 2011, he announced the end of his career. In 2020 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
