David Roy Akers (* 9. December 1974 in Lexington , Kentucky ) is a retired American American football poker players on the position of the Kickers . He played for the Detroit Lions , San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Akers was at the University of Louisville . During these four years he kicked a school record with 36 field goals and is second best in the school's internal scoring list.

NFL career

David Akers started as a free agent between 1997 and 1998 , during which time he tried his hand at the Atlanta Falcons , the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Redskins . For the 1998 season he was signed by the Redskins, but only played once.

In 1999 he was observed and committed by the Philadelphia Eagles . They sent him to the NFL Europe , where he played a strong season in Germany with Berlin Thunder and ultimately became the Eagles' regular kicker.

Akers was considered a surprise player at the time. He scored 29 of 33 field goals and held a team record with 121 points. This resulted in the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month (November 2000) and the Pro Bowl 2001 election.

He delivered his best season so far in 2002 when he scored 30 of 34 field goals, set a new team record of 133 points and was called to the Pro Bowl for the second time . In 2003 he achieved the second longest field goal in the history of the Eagles when he scored a field goal from 57 yards . Also in 2004 he kept his good form, with around 84% scored field goals.

In 2005 Akers was injured in the game against the Oakland Raiders . He tore his ligament on the kickoff . He came back into the game in the second half and scored two extra points and the winning field goal, but then collapsed on the field. He missed the next four games but was called to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time. 2006 was Aker's worst season, although he was injured, with only 18 of 23 field goals. On December 16, 2007, Akers broke a team record when he scored his 884th point for Philadelphia in the game against the Dallas Cowboys .

In 2011, after twelve seasons with the Eagles, he moved to the San Francisco 49ers . On September 9, 2012, Akers set an NFL record when he scored a field goal from 63 yards against the Green Bay Packers ; this record was only surpassed in 2013 by Matt Prater. After a mixed season with the 49ers, he was fired after the Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens .

In the summer of 2013 he was signed as a kicker by the Detroit Lions , replacing Jason Hanson , who previously ended his 21-year career with the Lions.
