Kevin James Mawae (* 23. January 1971 in Savannah , Georgia ) is a former American American football poker players, -Funktionär and active trainer. He played 16 seasons as Right Guards and Center in the National Football League (NFL). He was also president of the NFLPA players' union for four years . In 2019 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Career

Player career

In the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft , Mawae was selected by the Seattle Seahawks . He played as a right guard for the first two seasons before being retrained to the center in 1996 . As a rookie , he was elected to the PFWA All-Rookie Team . 1998 signed the New York Jets under Bill Parcells Mawae. Here he was able to convince and made it into the Pro Bowl six times and the All-Pro six times in eight seasons for the Jets . It was only after the 2005 season that the Jets separated from Mawae and drafted center Nick Mangold in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft . Mawae had previously sustained an arm injury in October 2005 that resulted in his streak of 177 uninterrupted games ending. He then played for the Tennessee Titans for four years . After the 2009 season, he ended his career. Mawae had blocked for a 1,000-yard running back in thirteen of his sixteen seasons , and 92 games for a 100-yard running back - the most offensive lineman in the NFL.

NFL Players Association

In 1998 Mawae became a player representative in the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). In 2002 he was also appointed to the Executive Committee. In 2008 he was first elected President of the NFLPA. In spring 2010 he was re-elected for a further term. Even after retiring from professional sports in September 2010, he remained the president until the end of his term in March 2012.

Coaching career

In September 2016, the Chicago Bears signed Mawae as an assistant coach for the offensive line . After Matt Nagy became head coach of the Bears, he did not take Mawae for his coaching team. In March 2018, Arizona State University hired Mawae as an offensive analyst for their football team.

Honors

During his NFL career, Mawae was called up to the Pro Bowl eight times , named All-Pro seven times , and was elected to the 2000s NFL All-Decade Team . In February 2019 he was also elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame . It was his fifth time that it was up for election and the third time that he was a finalist. He was only the fourth player to be elected to the Hall of Fame and played for the Jets for more than five seasons. In 2013 he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame .
