Matthew Nagy (born April 24, 1978 in Dunellen , New Jersey ) is an American former American football player and current coach. He is currently the head coach of the Chicago Bears in the NFL . Before that, he was an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs .
Career
Career as a player
After high school, Nagy played quarterback for the University of Delaware from 1997 to 2000 . In total, he threw 58 touchdown passes and got a quarterback rating of 146.74, which he set new school records. Nevertheless, he was not selected in the 2001 NFL Draft and, despite the slight interest of some teams, did not get a contract in the NFL. That's why he decided to go to the Arena Football League . There he signed a contract with the New York Dragons . This was followed by positions with the Carolina Cobras , Georgia Force and the Columbus Destroyers . In 2008 he ended his active career. He had previously reached the Arena Bowl twice , but lost both games.
Career as a coach
In 2008 Nagy became a coaching intern with the Philadelphia Eagles under Head Coach Andy Reid . He was also the offensive coordinator of Palmyra Area High School in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. From 2010 he got a permanent job as an assistant coach with the Eagles. After Reid was fired from the Eagles in 2012, Nagy followed him to the Kansas City Chiefs . There he was initially coach of the quarterbacks, from 2016 even offensive coordinator. Initially, however, he shared this job with Brad Childress . In 2017 they were even able to reach the playoffs , but failed in the wildcard round to the Tennessee Titans .
On January 8, 2018, Nagy signed on as the new head coach for the Chicago Bears . Before that, he had already been under discussion as the new head coach at the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets . In its first season, the Bears were able to win the NFC North and move into the playoffs. There, however, the Bears failed directly in the wild card round to the Philadelphia Eagles. Even so, Nagy received several coaching of the year awards from the Pro Football Writers Association and the Associated Press , among others .
In its second season, however, the Bears could no longer build on their previous successes. 8 wins were compared to 8 losses and the season ended only in third place for NFC North, behind the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings .
