Pedro Pablo Ramírez Machuca (born January 30, 1884 in La Paz , Entre Ríos , † May 12, 1962 in Buenos Aires ) was Argentine President for a short time from 1943 to 1944 .

Life

Ramírez graduated from the Argentine Military Academy in 1904 and was promoted to lieutenant in the cavalry in 1910 . In 1911 he was sent to Germany for further training. He returned to Argentina with his German wife in 1913. In 1930 he was the coup of General José Félix Uriburu against President Hipólito Yrigoyen involved. He then worked as an observer in fascist Italy until 1932 .

When Uriburu was elected from office in 1932, Ramírez began organizing fascist circles in the military . In 1942, President Ramón Castillo appointed him Minister of War, but dismissed him on May 18, 1943.

Ramírez then became one of the initiators of the coup of the fascist officer group Grupo de Oficiales Unidos against Castillo on June 4, 1943. The coup was formally led by General Arturo Rawson . After three days as Secretary of War, Ramírez ousted Rawson on June 7, which he held for eight months. First he dissolved parliament and from then on ruled by decrees .

Although he did not enter the Second World War , he supported the Axis powers , had pro-Allied forces and all opposition movements persecuted in Argentina and the Jewish press was banned. In addition to members of the opposition, all Jewish teachers were removed from schools and universities. This repressive exercise of power led to increasing indignation in the population.

As Japanese and German agents began operating from Argentina, there were sharp diplomatic protests from the United States . This internal and external resistance forced Ramírez to break off all diplomatic relations with the Axis powers in January 1944 and to resign on February 24th. His successor, the previous Vice President Edelmiro Julián Farrell , pursued an internally and externally moderate fascist policy, while Juan Perón began his rise to the actual rulers under both Ramírez and Farrell.
