Stephen Dennis Atwater (* 28. October 1966 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the safeties . He played from 1989 to 1999 for the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL). During his career, he won the Super Bowl twice with the Broncos and was elected to the Pro Bowl eight times .

College time

After a successful high school period as a quarterback , Atwater went to the University of Arkansas . Here he was retrained from quarterback to safety position. He was able to catch a total of 14 interceptions in Arkansas and was chosen three times as one of the best players in the All Southwest Conference and twice as All-American .

Professional time

In 1989 Atwater was selected in the NFL Draft as the twentieth player in the first round by the Denver Broncos. After a good season performance, he came second in the election for the best young defensive player ( Rookie of the Year ). In the following years he was captain of the defense of the Broncos. After the Broncos released him after the second Super Bowl success for salary cap reasons in 1998, he played another year for the New York Jets, where he ended his career after one season due to injury.

Atwater was best known for his strength in running defense. He was elected eight times to the Pro Bowl and three times to the All Pro Team. In total, he scored over 1000 tackles , was able to intercept 24 passes and force twelve fumbles . He took part in the Super Bowl three times and won twice. He is a member of the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame . After retiring, he was elected to the National Football League 1990s All-Decade Team . In 2020, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

After the professional career

Atwater now works for a private investment company in Atlanta .
