However, his supervisors convinced him to accept a scholarship for the football program, in which he played as a guard from 1984 to 1987 . He was called to the Senior Bowl for his services .

Professional time

In 1988, Dawson was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft in 44th place by the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his first season he was only used as a guard in eight games due to an injury. Between 1989 and 1999 he ran in 171 games in a row for the Steelers team. Together with Ray Mansfield , Mike Webster and Jeff Hartings , he was one of only four players from 1964 to 2006 who started regularly for the Steelers on the position of the center. After struggling with injuries in both the 1999 and 2000 seasons, the Steelers released him from his contract in 2000. During that time he was called seven times to the Pro Bowl and six times to the All Pro Team and was elected to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team . Because of his friendly nature, he was nicknamed Ned Flanders by his teammates . After being nominated several times for the Pro Football Hall of Fame , he was finally inducted in 2012.
