Yokamon Hearn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yokamon Laneal Hearn (born November 6, 1978 - July 18, 2012 in Huntsville , Texas ) was an American citizen who was executed as a convicted murderer using lethal injection . The case caused a stir because there was reason to believe that Hearn was mentally retarded .

Act, trial and imprisonment

On March 26, 1998, Hearn is said to have killed a 23-year-old stockbroker with ten shots from a TEC-9 after a carjacking . At the age of 19, Yokamon Hearn was sentenced to death . His accomplice, of the same age, received a life sentence . Hearn was on death row for 14 years after the trial . His first scheduled execution date in March 2004 was postponed by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals . The defense alleged that Hearn was diagnosed with an intellectual disability due to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome . According to a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court in 2002, the mentally handicapped may not be executed, the limit being an IQ of 70. In an intelligence test carried out in 2005 by an appraiser on behalf of the defense, Hearn came up with an intelligence quotient of 74, which corresponds to a learning disability .

execution

The US Supreme Court refused to stop the execution hours before the execution of the July 18, 2012 death sentence .

It was the first execution in the US state to use one drug instead of three. The reason for the change in the method that has been in use since 1982 was that the shelf life of the state's supply of one of the drugs used had expired. Yokamon Hearn was killed with a single dose of the strong anesthetic pentobarbital .

The United Nations had called on the United States not to enforce the judgment on the man's disability. The execution attracted worldwide attention.
