The Vince Lombardi Trophy is the trophy that the winner of the annual Super Bowl of the American football league National Football League (NFL) wins. The trophy was named in honor of the Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers during Superbowl I , Vince Lombardi .

history

Since Super Bowl XXX on January 28, 1996, it has been awarded on the field to the owner of the winning club. Before that, it was presented in the locker room after the game. Tiffany & Co. Vice President Oscar Riedner first drew a draft of the trophy in 1966 while having lunch with NFL official Pete Rozelle . The first trophy was awarded to the Green Bay Packers on January 15, 1967 when they won the very first Superbowl against the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.

Although the trophy is awarded to the winner of the National Football Championship, it was previously engraved with "World Professional Football Championship".

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is not a challenge cup , which means that it is different from z. B. the Stanley Cup or the Gray Cup are made anew every year and the winning team can keep the cup. There are two such trophies at every Super Bowl in case one gets damaged.

Since the Superbowl XLV it is represented on all logos of the Superbowls and is prominently displayed mostly in the middle of the logos.

Appearance

The 3.5-kg and 55 cm Cup, presented by & Tiffany Co. in Parsippany ( New Jersey is made), is a football -size on a column. It is made of sterling silver and 25,000  US dollars (about 17,000  euros ). The words "Vince Lombardi Trophy" and " NFL " are engraved on the column .

In the first four championship games, both the NFL and the AFL logo were the focus of the cup. As of Super Bowl V , only the NFL sign was on the front. Starting with Super Bowl XXXVIII , the shield took on a matte look. Starting with Super Bowl XLIII , the slightly redesigned NFL shield appeared on the trophy. Other than the logo, no significant changes have been made to the trophy since the first Super Bowl. While no franchise owns all four versions, the Green Bay Packers , New England Patriots , New York Giants, and Pittsburgh Steelers have three of the four designs.

After the trophy is awarded, it will be sent back to the makers to be engraved with the name of the winning team, as well as the date and score.

Teams with the most trophies

The Super Bowl is currently played in early February (the game originally took place in early to mid-January) and culminates in a regular season that usually begins in September of the previous calendar year. For example, Super Bowl 50, which was played on February 7, 2016, determined the league champions for the 2015 NFL season. The following years refer to the season and not the date on which the Super Bowl was actually played.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008) are tied with the New England Patriots (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2018) with six Vince Lombardi Trophies. The Dallas Cowboys (1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, 1995) and the San Francisco 49ers (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1994) are in third place with 5 each. The Green Bay Packers (1966, 1967, 1996, 2010) and the New York Giants (1986, 1990, 2007, 2011) are in fifth place with four each. The Las Vegas Raiders (formerly Oakland Raiders) (1976, 1980, 1983), the Washington Redskins (1982, 1987, 1991) and the Denver Broncos (1997, 1998, 2015) take seventh place with three each.
