Gover Conner "Ox" Emerson (born December 18, 1907 in Douglass , Texas , † November 26, 1998 in Austin , Texas) was an American football player . He played mostly as a guard in the National Football League (NFL).

Player career

College career

Emerson played at the University of Texas at Austin from 1929 . At his college he was used as a guard. In 1931 he had to end his college career after the usual three years of study, since in 1928 he had already completed two games for another team.

Professional career

From 1931 to 1938 Emerson played in the NFL, first until 1933 for the Portsmouth Spartans , who had made him and two other players of the Longhorns a contract offer. Emerson played for the Detroit Lions until 1937 after the team moved to Detroit . 1931 Emerson earned 75 US dollars per game. In 1935 the Lions were able to win the NFL championship 26: 7 against the New York Giants . In Detroit he played until 1937. In 1938 Emerson ran again for a year for the Brooklyn Dodgers for a salary of 150 US dollars per game and then ended his playing career. Emerson could not get wealthy, neither the $ 75 he made in his first year of play nor the $ 150 the Dodgers paid him the usual pay of a multiple All-Star.

Honors

Emerson is a member of the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team and the Detroit Lions All Time Team . From 1932 to 1937 he was elected all-pro . He is in the Hall of Fame of his university, as well as in the Greater Austin Sports Foundation's Hall of Honor and in 1930 was elected to the All Time Team of the Football Conference (football league) of his college.

Others

After his career, Emerson first worked at Ford and in 1942 he joined the United States Navy , where he served as Lieutenant Commander . His ship the USS Block Island was sunk by a German submarine . Emerson was able to save himself on a rubber dinghy. He and other sailors were only rescued by a destroyer after several hours . During his time in the military, he trained a local military team. He later continued his coaching career in high school and from 1951 to 1956 at his old college. After he finished his coaching career in 1976, he worked as a teacher. In 1985 he retired. He is buried in the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery and Mausoleum in Austin.
