The Toledo Maroons were a US American football team in Toledo , Ohio , which at times in the National Football League played (NFL).

history

The Maroons were formed in 1906 as a youth team to promote high school players. From 1910 the team developed into a professional adult team, which was considered the best in its region. Local players earned $ 20 to $ 50 per game, while non-residents made up to $ 75. They never had a permanent stadium, but used the various playing fields of local schools. Since 1914, they have been considered one of the strongest teams in the country, beating many of the best teams in the country. Due to the increasing interest, the Maroons soon needed a larger stadium and used the Armory Park for it . They sold tickets for 75 cents, and for top games for one dollar.

In December 1916 it came out that the manager of the Maroons, Art Gratop , was planning to open a professional football league modeled on Major League Baseball (MLB) and asked for financial support from the team owners of the MLB, as he intended the ballpark to rent which were no longer used after the end of the baseball season in October. The owners of some teams could be convinced - Planned locations of the teams were among others Chicago, New York, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Columbus. The plans were but with the entry of the United States in the First World War buried.

When the American Professional Football Association was founded in 1920 , the Maroons decided to remain independent and only play against teams from northeast Ohio . In 1922, the people in charge of the Maroons decided to join the league, now renamed the National Football League (NFL), and ended their season in fourth place. In 1923 they played again in the NFL and finished the season in eleventh. Due to the persistently poor attendance figures in the home arenas used at Armory Park and Swayne Field , the NFL officials gave the order either to move or to stop playing. In September 1924, the reported Kenosha Evening News that the city Kenosha in Wisconsin had decided the franchise to buy. The team was renamed Kenosha Maroons , but had to stop playing after another year of play.

uniform

The players' clothing consisted of a deep red jersey with white-striped sleeves. Leather padding was attached to the shoulders and elbows. The pants were heavily padded, very large and very loose.
