Matthias Thumser

Matthias Thumser (born September 24, 1953 in Hof ) is a German historian .

Matthias Thumser studied history, German and geography in Würzburg. From 1981 to 1992 he was a research assistant and university assistant in Marburg with Jürgen Petersohn . In 1986 he received his doctorate under Otto Meyer . His habilitation took place in Marburg in 1992. From 1994 to 1997 Thumser was a research assistant in Marburg and Gießen. From 1998 to 2018 he taught in the successor of Dietrich Kurz as a professor of medieval history at the Free University of Berlin . In 1996 he was awarded the Science Prize of the Stauferstiftung Göppingen . In 2007, Thumser succeeded Gert von Pistohlkors as chairman of the Baltic Historical Commission .

His main research interests are the papacy and Rome in the high and late Middle Ages, the letter culture in the 13th century and Livonia in the Middle Ages. Thumser leads research projects on the collection of letters from Thomas von Capua , on the letters of Pope Clement IV and on the Liv, Est and Courland document books (1472–1494).
