Litdok East Central Europe
Litdok Ostmitteleuropa ( literature documentation on the history of East Central Europe ) is a bibliographic online database on the history of East Central Europe, edited by the Herder Institute (Marburg) .
History and function
Since its founding in 1950, the Herder Institute in Marburg has been operating bibliographical documentation primarily for the historical German eastern territories, published both in the institute's magazine, the magazine for East Research , and in monographs. With the reorganization of the institute through the organizational separation from the Johann Gottfried Herder Research Council in 1994, this work was placed on a new basis. The focus on regional bibliographies of individual historical regions was abandoned, instead the whole of East Central Europe was taken into account; the works were no longer only created by German editors, but in cooperation with bibliographical offices in Poland (Krakow, Thorn, Breslau, Posen), the Czech Republic (Prague), Slovakia (Bratislava), Lithuania (Vilnius), Hungary (Budapest) ; finally, the creation of printed annual bibliographies was abandoned and an online database was operated since 1998.
Content and profile
The database lists all publications on the history of Eastern Europe from prehistory and early history to contemporary history; spatially it takes into account the territories of today's Baltic states , the Czech Republic, Slovakia and historical Poland and Hungary . The database recorded more than 600,000 titles at the beginning of 2011, the annual title increase amounts to around 40,000 entries. A characteristic feature of the database is its multilingualism : The user interface, the classification and the subject indexing are not only available in German and English, but also in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Estonian and Russian. The thesauri of subject indexing for the treated persons and places (currently around 47,000 or 16,000 entries) represent an information medium of their own with the life data and brief characteristics of the persons or the various single-language name forms.
