biography

High school and college

Shockey grew up in the small town of Ada and was so skinny in high school that the football coach initially refused to let him play. The teenager impressed with his talent, so that he was used both in the offense as a wide receiver and in the defense as a linebacker . Even so, he was considered to be too fragile the then “only” 88 kilogram senior and chose the small Northeastern Oklahoma A&M as a junior college. There, Shockey trained himself more muscle mass and was converted into a tight end due to his speed, athleticism and secure hands. In 2000 he attracted the attention of the University of Miami and became a member of the local Hurricanes . There Shockey established himself as one of the best tight ends and helped his team win the 2001 NCAA championships and was elected to the All-American team.

NFL

In the 2002 NFL Draft , Shockey was selected as the 14th player by the New York Giants . The tight end had an excellent season, scooping 894 yards of space, catching 74 passes and scoring two touchdowns , being elected to the Pro Bowl and winning the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year title. In the media city of New York , the long-haired and extroverted shockey became a crowd-pleaser, even if the coaches sometimes found his quick-tempered manner a problem: after the Giants were defeated in the play-offs by the San Francisco 49ers with 38:39, he showered them Journalists with insults and poured water over the head of a fan.

In the following years Shockey was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2003, 2005 and 2006 . The Giants themselves sank in mediocrity, until 2004 the quarterback and future Super Bowl MVP , Eli Manning , was drafted. Together with Manning, running back Tiki Barber and defensive end Michael Strahan , Shockey contributed to the strengthening of the Giants and had three seasons in which he caught more than 60 passes and always gained more than 600 yards of space. However, Shockey occasionally caused trouble because he described his head coach Tom Coughlin as incompetent after a loss to the Seattle Seahawks and cursed the coach of the Dallas Cowboys , Bill Parcells , as "homo".

In 2007, Shockey broke his fibula and was out for the remainder of the season. Even so, the Giants won Super Bowl XLII against the previously undefeated New England Patriots , and there was speculation that the Giants wanted to give up the unpredictable, no longer indispensable tight end . Shockey responded by boycotting the training camp and was traded to the New Orleans Saints in the offseason .

In the city that was still ravaged by Hurricane Katrina , Shockey could no longer quite match his old form. In the 2008 season he gained 483 yards of space and caught 50 passes, both of which were career lows. But despite excellent performances by quarterback Drew Brees , the Saints did not make it into the play-offs . The following season went all the better. Surprisingly, the Saints made it into Super Bowl XLIV , defeating the favorite Indianapolis Colts and their three-time MVP Peyton Manning with 31:17. Shockey contributed to this with a touchdown . After he won the Super Bowl with the Giants without having been on the pitch in the final, he has now won his first "real" ring. In 2010 he could not prevent the Saints from sensationally eliminated in the first play-off round against the Seattle Seahawks , who were the first NFL team to come into the play-offs despite a negative record as division winners.

Private life

Shockey is the son of Lucinda and Jimmy Shockey and he has an older brother named James. His father left the family when he was a child. In addition to mother and brother, Shockey mentions his grandmother Evylene as inspiration, who was paraplegic after an accident, but still always supported the upbringing of her grandchildren.

The patriotic shockey has a large tattoo on his right arm that extends from the shoulder to the wrist and contains many typical American symbols such as the Bald Eagle or the Stars and Stripes .
