NFL
Diehl was selected in 2003 by the New York Giants trained by Jim Fassel in the fifth round in 160th place in the NFL Draft . Although the late signing gave him little prospect of a lasting career, he started as a starter in his first game . As an offensive tackle, his job was to protect the team's quarterback and Tiki Barber , the Giants' running back , to block the way into the end zone . In 2004 the Giants signed Tom Coughlin as head coach and Eli Manning as the new quarterback. In the following year, the new signings showed their first successes - for the first time since 2002, the Giants were able to move back into the play-offs , where they failed early against the Carolina Panthers . In 2006 the Giants could only show a balanced record, but moved into the Super Bowl the following year . The Super Bowl XLII could be won with 17:14 against the New England Patriots . In 2008 the Giants were able to win twelve of their 16 games, but failed again early in the play-offs, this time to the Philadelphia Eagles . Dave Diehl won his second Super Bowl in 2012. After a 20:17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game , the Giants were able to beat the Patriots again with 21:17 in the Super Bowl XLVI .
Diehl was originally under contract with the Giants until 2011. He received this 2005 earning over 15.5 million US dollars . In 2008 the contract was extended to six years. It was linked to a salary of $ 31 million. In 2013, his salary was cut to $ 1 million. In January 2014 he announced his retirement after eleven years with the New York Giants.
