Plaxico Burress (* 12. August 1977 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of wide receiver . He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers , New York Giants and New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL) from 2000 to 2013 . He won Super Bowl XLII with the Giants .

Career

Burress played college football for Michigan State University very successfully and was selected in 2000 by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the NFL Draft in 8th position. Burress became a starter in his sophomore year in the NFL, and especially in long passes, a danger to the opponent. His height of 1.96 m and his great jumping ability create problems for many NFL teams in defending Burress. In 2001 and 2002 he caught passes for more than 1000 yards each  .

In 2005 he moved to the New York Giants , where he signed a contract that secured him a salary of $ 25 million over six years. With his new team, he became one of the favorite points of interest for quarterback Eli Manning . In the 2007 season, the Giants reached the play-offs as a "wild card team" and advanced to Super Bowl XLII . Against the previously unbeaten New England Patriots , Plaxico Burress caught Eli Manning's decisive touchdown pass 35 seconds before the end to make the final score of 17-14 for the Giants and thus secured his first Super Bowl ring.

Firearms offense on November 28, 2008 and subsequent suspension

On November 28, 2008, while visiting a New York nightclub, Burress suffered a gunshot wound to his right hip, which witnesses said he inflicted on himself while handling a gun. He was treated for this injury in a New York hospital on November 29th. The police are investigating Burress for two offenses of illicit gun possession. He was taken into custody on Monday, December 1st, 2008 and released by a court on bail of US $ 100,000.

On December 2, 2008, the New York Giants suspended Plaxico Burress for the remaining four games of the 2008/2009 NFL regular season and put him on the "Reserve non-Football Injury" list. As a result of this measure, he was unable to participate in his team's training sessions for the rest of the season (including play-offs), nor could he return to the squad as an active player. The suspension was justified with Burress' behavior, which was considered "detrimental to the team".

As a result of his suspension by the New York Giants, Burress lost his entitlement to the weekly paycheck, which in his case was approximately $ 206,000 per game. Burress was sacked by the Giants on April 3, 2009.

On August 20, 2009, Burress pleaded guilty to, among other things, illicit gun possession, sentencing him to two years' imprisonment and two years probation.

Previous incidents

The suspension on December 2, 2008 was the second such measure for Burress during the current season. Since 2005, Burress has received numerous fines for violating team or NFL rules.

  • On June 12, 2008, the New York Giants fined Burress $ 25,000. He had refused to attend a mandatory training camp.
  • On August 19, 2008, Burress' wife called the police over a domestic argument. The court issued an injunction against Burress.
  • For the game against the Seattle Seahawks on October 2, 2008, Burress had not been called up by the team because he did not appear at a team meeting (part of a two-week suspension); he was also fined $ 117,000 from the New York Giants.
  • On October 19, 2008, he received a $ 45,000 misconduct penalty from the NFL for improper behavior during and after the game against the San Francisco 49ers : After a referee punished Burress for a foul, Burress insulted him and put the ball in thrown the spectator stands. Even after the end of the game, Burress had made negative comments to the referee team.
  • On October 26, 2008, Burress was not considered on the grid for the first quarter of the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers . The team justified the measure by missing a prescribed treatment appointment.

New beginning

On August 1, 2011, Burress was signed by the New York Jets . He signed a one-year contract that guaranteed him $ 3 million. Despite a good season with the Jets, his contract was not renewed and he couldn't find another team for a long time.

Return to the Pittsburgh Steelers

After wide receivers Jerricho Cotchery and Antonio Brown were injured, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed the Burress, who was still looking for a team, after a trial session on November 20, 2012.
