George Henry Sauer Jr. (* 10. November 1943 in Sheboygan , Wisconsin ; † 7. May 2013 in Westerville , Ohio ) was an American American football poker players on the position of wide receiver . He played for the New York Jets in the American Football League and, after the merger, in the National Football League (NFL).
Origin / college
The Sauer family is originally from Russia . They were Volga Germans from Norka (Nork), a community that is now in Armenia . His grandparents emigrated to the USA. His father George Sauer senior is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , was a highly regarded football player and football coach and played as a professional for the Green Bay Packers . George Sauer, Jr. grew up in Waco , Texas , where he already played American football in high school . Sauer played college football at the University of Texas after graduating from high school .
Profile career
Without being selected in the NFL Draft , he was hired by the New York Jets as a wide receiver in 1965 . By 1970 Sauer was able to achieve 28 touchdowns in 84 games for the Jets . Sauer celebrated his greatest success in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game , which was later renamed Super Bowl III . In this Super Bowl he was staged several times by his quarterback Joe Namath and was able to gain 133 yards of space with eight pass catches . The Jets won the game against the favored Baltimore Colts 16-7 . Sauer's performance helped Namath get elected to the Super Bowl MVP . In 1970 he surprisingly ended his career in the NFL because he had lost his interest in football. In 1974 he joined the New York Stars , a team that was based in the World Football League . However, the league stopped playing after a year.
Honors
Sauer played four times in the Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro three times .
After the career
Sauer was married and lived in Waco. He died at the age of 69 from complications from heart failure .
