Curt Gowdy

Curt Gowdy (born July 31, 1919 in Green River , Wyoming , † February 20, 2006 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was a well -known American sports commentator . He was a commentator on the Boston Red Sox for many years .

life and career

Gowdy began his career in 1949 alongside Mel Allen as a radio and television commentator of games of the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball . From 1951 to 1965 he worked for the Boston Red Sox . Together with Paul Christman , he commented on the first five seasons of the American Football League .

In 1988 Gowdy made a guest appearance as a sports commentator in the comedy film The Naked Cannon , and 2001 in Summer Catch . He could be heard in the film Heaven should wait (1978) and the comedy BASEketball (1998).

Awards and honors

In 1970 Gowdy became the first sports commentator to receive the Peabody Award . He was inducted into the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1981 and the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1985 . In 1984 he received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame , and in 1993 the Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame . In 1992 he received an Emmy Award for his life's work. The Boston Red Sox inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1995.

Curt Gowdy State Park in Wyoming was named after Gowdy in 1972 .

After his death, the Green River, Wyoming community renamed a United States Postal Service building to the Curt Gowdy Post Office Building in October 2006 .
