Green River is a city in Sweetwater County in the southwest of the US state Wyoming with 11,807 inhabitants (as of July 1, 2004 ). The city is named after the Green River , the largest tributary of the Colorado River . Green River is the county seat of Sweetwater County.

history

The place Green River was officially granted city rights in 1868. It was then part of the Dakota Territory . The city was the starting point of John Wesley Powell's exploratory trips along the Green River , the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon at the end of the 19th century . Originally a base for the Union Pacific Railroad was to be built on the site of the Green River site, but when the construction work reached that point, the planners discovered that a settlement had already formed at this site. The base of the railway company was therefore built almost twenty kilometers to the west.

At the time of its official registration as a city in 1868, Green River had about 2,000 permanent residents, some of whom lived in buildings made of adobe bricks . With the establishment of the railway base further west, there was a rapid decline in the number of inhabitants. Only about 100 residents stayed here. However, when the Black Fork dried up due to a dry spell, the railroad company was forced to relocate its base to Green River. Under the laws of the newly formed state of Wyoming, Green River became a city on May 5, 1891.

Economy and raw materials

The basin of the Green River holds the world's largest deposits of Trona . The extraction of sodium carbonate from trona veins, which are between 200 and 500 meters thick, is an important economic factor. Around 2000 people are employed in the five mines.

Mining is cheaper to produce sodium carbonate in the United States than the predominantly synthetic Solvay process that is widely used elsewhere in the world . The Trona in Sweetwater County was created by prehistoric Lake Gosiute . Over time this lake disappeared. In the absence of natural drains, highly alkaline water began to evaporate and the Trona was deposited.

The Green Rivers mines are operated by the following five companies:

Oil shale and natural gas have been found in the geological basin . Due to the high cost of extracting the oil from the hard shale, these deposits have not yet been touched. The recent surge in commodity prices and the United States’s desire for more energy independence from the Middle East has led to an increase in exploratory drilling in the Green River Basin. Green Rivers and the nearby town of Rock Springs have seen growth through the activities of companies such as Halliburton and Exxon, as well as other oil companies .
