Robert Lee "Trey" Flowers III (* 16th August 1993 in Huntsville , Alabama ) is an American American football player at the position of the defensive ends . He played college football for the University of Arkansas and was selected in the 2015 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots , with whom he won Super Bowl LI and Super Bowl LIII . He has been under contract with the Detroit Lions since 2019 .

college

Flowers was born in 1993 in Huntsville , Alabama , and attended Columbia High School there. He then played college football from 2011 to 2014 . After initially choosing Georgia Tech , but changing his mind after less than a week, he attended the University of Arkansas , where he played for the Arkansas Razorbacks in NCAA Division I FBS.

He had a total of 190 tackles in four seasons , including 47.5 for loss of space, 18.0 sacks , 13 defended passes, one interception and four forced fumbles .

In the NFL Combine , Flowers was one of the best players in his position in the high and long jump from a standing start. In the NFL Draft 2015 Flowers was selected in the 4th round in 101st place by the New England Patriots . With the Patriots, he signed a four-year contract for $ 2.8 million.

In his rookie season Flowers was rarely used after an injury in the first game of the preseason . In the season 2016 Flowers made the breakthrough. First he scored a touchdown in the preseason as a result of a sack . After he got two sacks in week 8 of the regular season against the Buffalo Bills , he started as a starter from week 10 and ended the regular season with seven sacks, he scored 45 tackles and conquered two fumbles .

With the Patriots Flowers moved into the Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons , in which he played an important role. He scored six tackles and 2.5 sacks. Four minutes before the end, a sack of Flowers played a decisive role in preventing the Falcons, who were eight points ahead, from achieving a field goal . The Patriots finally won the game with 34:28 in overtime, with which Flowers celebrated his first Super Bowl victory.

He started fourteen games in the 2017 season and missed two games due to an injury. With 6.5 sacks, he was the Patriots player with the most sacks, as in the previous season. For the second time in a row he reached the Super Bowl, where the Patriots were defeated this time by the Philadelphia Eagles .

In 2018 Flowers was again in the Super Bowl with the Patriots. In Super Bowl LIII , the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 . In the regular season, Flowers again achieved team-internal best values ​​with 7.5 sacks in the regular season and two more in the playoffs.

Flowers, whose contract was expiring with the Patriots, has been playing for the Detroit Lions since 2019 , with whom he signed a five-year contract worth $ 90 million.
