James Richard "Jimmy" Garoppolo (* 2 November 1991 in Arlington Heights , Illinois ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He plays for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL).

Life

youth

Garoppolo grew up in Arlington Heights and attended Rolling Meadows High School there. His parents are from Italy.

college

Garoppolo played football for the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University from 2010 to 2013 . In his first year he started in eight games. He reached 1,639 yards and 14 touchdowns and was elected to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team under coach Bob Spoo . He started in all other games for Eastern Illinois, reaching 2,644 yards thrown and 20 touchdowns in 2011, 3,823 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2012 and 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns in 2013, breaking the school record for full passes previously set by the later quarterback Dallas Cowboys , Tony Romo , was held.

As a senior he won the Walter Payton Award , which was given to the most outstanding offensive player in the Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision . He was also named Male Athlete of the Year 2013-14 at the Ohio Valley Conference .

NFL

New England Patriots

Garoppolo was selected 62nd by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft . He was the New England Patriots' highest drafted quarterback since the 1993 NFL Draft , when Drew Bledsoe was voted first. On June 3, 2014 , he signed a four-year deal with the New England Patriots.

Garoppolo made his debut in the fourth week of the 2014 season . He threw a 13-yard touchdown on tight end Rob Gronkowski and finished the game with 6 full passes on 7 tries for 70 yards.

In his first season, he played 6 games, threw 19 complete passes on 27 attempts, and had 182 yards thrown and one touchdown. At the end of the season he won the Super Bowl XLIX along with the New England Patriots .

For the 2016 season he was named a starter because the actual starting quarterback Tom Brady was banned for the first four games. In week two, however, Garoppolo injured himself in the second quarter and was eliminated for the rest of the season. However, he remained a member of the team and was thus part of the team that won the Super Bowl LI .

San Francisco 49ers

On October 30, 2017, the Patriots exchanged Garoppolo for a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft for the San Francisco 49ers . Garoppolo first appeared for the 49ers in week 12 of the 2017 season , when they played against the Seattle Seahawks . It made this unexpected debut after the actual quarterback, rookie C. J. Beathard , injured himself late in the last quarter of the game. Garoppolo threw another touchdown, but could no longer prevent the defeat. From week 13 of the season, Jimmy Garoppolo was used as starting quarterback by the 49ers. He won the first six games as a starter in the 49ers jersey with his team. On September 23, 2018, Garoppolo tore his cruciate ligament in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs and was placed on the Injured Reserve List .

In the 2019 season he led the 49ers to 13 wins and thus to reaching the play-offs as the best-seeded team in the National Football Conference (NFC). After victories in the Divisional Round over the Minnesota Vikings (27:10) and in the NFC Championship Game over the Green Bay Packers (37:20), he and his team made it into the Super Bowl LIV . However, this was lost with 31:20 against the Kansas City Chiefs .
