Nate Ebner (born December 14, 1988 in Dublin , Ohio ) is an American football player for the New England Patriots in the National Football League . Nominally, he plays in the position of defensive back , but is mainly used in the special teams . He also represents the United States in 7-a-side rugby .

Early years

Ebner was an avid rugby union player in his youth and played the sport primarily at Ohio State University . He played football, which is more popular in the United States, almost as a sideline, mainly in the special teams.

NFL

Ebner established himself as one of the best gunner in college football and was drawn 197th in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Patriots. Ebner established himself as a reliable special teams player in New England and won the Super Bowl three times with them ( Super Bowl XLIX , Super Bowl LI and Super Bowl LIII ).

With the consent of the Patriots, Ebner successfully applied for a place in the United States' Olympic rugby seven squad at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . Hereby he became only the second NFL professional after Herschel Walker to represent the USA during an active football career at the Olympics.

Personal

Ebner is a practicing Jew . His father was killed in a robbery in 2008.
