Stuart "Stu" Alistair Holden (* 1. August 1985 in Aberdeen , Scotland ) is a former Scottish - American football player at the position of midfielder , who from 2008 to 2013 25 caps for the United States made.

Club career

Career start in Scotland and the USA

Holden spent his first years in his native Scotland, where he attended the Aberdeen FC School of Excellence until 1995, where he gained his first experience as a football player. When he was ten, his family moved to Houston , Texas , where his father got a job at Chevron Corporation , one of the world's largest oil companies, where he worked in human resources. In his new home he initially played in various youth soccer clubs , such as the Eclipse Soccer Club in Sugar Land or the Texans FC Soccer Club in Houston.

He later worked on an amateur basis for the soccer team of the Awty International School , one of the largest private schools in the USA, and was elected the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times and was on the All-State First Team for all three years . At the same time Holden came on for the college team of Clemson University , the Clemson Tigers , in three semesters for use. In his freshman year, Holden played twelve games in which he made two assists for his teammates. In the second year the Scot was promoted as a sophomore to a regular player of the Clemson Tigers, where he scored in 15 appearances three goals were as many assists and next subsequent professional players like James Georgeff , Justin Moore , Nathan Sturgis , Landy Mattison or Hunter Gilstrap used came.

In March 2005, Holden moved back to Europe while still studying and signed with Sunderland AFC , which at that time was still playing in the second-rate Football League Championship . Shortly after his move, Holden was attacked on March 12, 2005 in Newcastle upon Tyne by a group of four men while he was with his brother and a friend outside a bar in Tyneside . Stuart Holden was beaten and suffered a cheekbone fracture and a triple fracture of the orbit . This injury prevented Holden's use in the professional team of Sunderland, whose squad he was part of the entire season.

The time at Houston Dynamo

Stuart Holden in action (2009)

After Holden did not play a single competitive game for the English, he went back to North America for the 2006 season and signed with the professional league Major League Soccer , where he was at Houston Dynamo . Holden, who took on US citizenship in the same year and has since been a dual citizen, made his professional league debut on May 27, 2006 in a 1-1 away draw against the New England Revolution . He scored his first professional goal on July 22, 2006 again against New England Revolution in a 1-1 home draw, when he came into play a minute before for Brad Davis and converted the ball into the goal in the 63rd minute of his first touch .

During his first professional season, Holden made 13 league appearances, in which, however, he never played through the entire match duration and often only came for short appearances, and was also in two MLS Cup play-off games for his team Commitment. The biggest success this season was winning the MLS Cup , the final game of the 2006 MLS season, which the team fought against New England Revolution and only prevailed on penalties. Holden made a brief appearance in this game that lasted a few minutes and converted his penalty in the end.

In the 2007 season , the native Scot brought a total of 22 league appearances to a record of five goals and as many assists. Initially only active as a substitute, he came on June 21, 2007 in a 4-0 home win over CD Chivas USA for the first time in his professional career over the full playing time. Holden also performed well on July 5, 2007 in a 4-0 home win over the New York Red Bulls when he replaced Brad Davis, who was unable to participate in the game due to an injury, from the start and scored a goal in the game and prepared two more hits. In the play-offs, the midfielder played four times during this season and scored one goal. As in the previous season, Houston Dynamo made it back to the MLS Cup, the final. There the team was able to prevail again against the challenger New England Revolution and won 2-1; Holden came on a brief assignment.

The midfielder, who can be used on the left as well as in the center, did not become a regular player in the 2008 season . However, he brought it on longer and longer assignments and was often in action over the entire season. In 27 league encounters, he had three goals and four assists. Among other things, Holden scored on October 15, 2008 in a 2-1 home win over the San José Earthquakes with goals in the beginning and the end of the match both goals for his team. The 1.78 m tall midfielder played a total of seven appearances in the CONCACAF Champions League 2008/09 , where he and his team were eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual champion CF Atlante with a total score of 1: 4 from the return leg. In addition, Holden was allowed to book two appearances in the play-offs of 2008. In the North American SuperLiga 2008 Holden reached the final with the Dynamos and was together with Ante Razov and Shalrie Joseph with three goals the top scorer of the competition. The second place in the MLS Supporters' Shield 2008 spoke for the fair play of Houston Dynamo, Holden also received only three yellow cards in all his league appearances during this season. In 2008 his team also named him “US Soccer Humanitarian of the Year”.

In the 2009 season he made the long-awaited appearance as the Texan's regular player. He scored a total of six goals in a total of 26 championship appearances and served his teammates with assists twice. Besides, Holden was active in three play-off games and played five games during the CONCACAF Champions League 2009/10 in which he scored two goals and contributed one assist. However, he was eliminated from the current competition with Houston Dynamo in the group stage. Although a possible $ 350,000 contract with Houston Dynamo was in the room, Holden took the at the time still uncertain route to Europe.

Change to the English Premier League

After the end of the MLS season in 2009, he went back to Europe for the second time and trained with Bolton Wanderers , then playing in the Premier League , to which Holden's official change followed on January 25, 2010. At Bolton Wanderers he was not only on the reserve team in the Premier Reserve League but also on the professional team. After he made his reserve team debut on February 10, 2010, when he played in a 2-0 away defeat by Manchester City's reserves in the first 61 minutes, he was already in the first leg of the first leg of the 2009/10 FA Cup unattended on the bench of the professionals.

To his competitive debut for the professionals came Holden on February 24, 2010, when he was used in the 0: 4 away defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup second leg over the full game in the right midfield. Just three days later, the midfielder made his league debut on February 27. In the 1-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers , he was again in action for the full 90 minutes. Less than a week later he broke his fibula during a friendly international match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam , which caused him to be out for two months due to injury. In the last season game of the Premier League 2009/10 , a 2-1 home win over Birmingham City , Holden made his comeback to the team when he acted as a substitute for Matthew Taylor from the 66th minute . On March 30, 2010, the contract of the midfield player who was injured at the end of the season was extended by a further three years until 2013.

Few missions as a permanently injured person

His breakthrough season in England, however, should be the 2010/11 season , in which he worked as a regular for much of the season, especially in the central midfield. After the World Cup in South Africa , where he was used in a game by the Americans, the native of Scots made a record of 26 league games in which he contributed two goals and as many assists. In a 0-1 away defeat against Manchester United , Holden was fouled by Northern Irishman Jonny Evans shortly before the end of the game , with an open wound, a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and a fracture of the femur ; his second serious injury within a year. Despite his injury, he was named Bolton Wanderers' best young player at the end of the season. Because of this injury, he left the game for another six months and only came back on August 30, 2011 in a 7-0 defeat against the reserve team of Fulham FC to his return.

After another appearance in the Premier Reserve League and a 90-minute performance for the professionals in the 2010/11 League Cup against Aston Villa , a routine examination revealed that Holden sustained the next injury, cartilage damage in his already badly battered knee would have. In another knee operation, after which he was supposed to be absent for another six weeks, major damage was found, which is why the injury break for the US national player extended further. Another six months passed without Stuart Holden being used in a competitive game for the English. After he had resumed team training at the end of March and beginning of April 2012 , he was no longer deployed under his Scottish-Irish coach Owen Coyle , who later was even to become the coach of his former US club Houston Dynamo the last eight championship games of the Premier League 2011/12 no longer in the professional squad.

Short comeback and another injury

The Bolton Wanderers had been relegated to the second-rate Football League Championship after eleven years in the Premier League , but here, too, Holden was not considered by Owen Coyle and, from October 23, 2012, by his successor Dougie Freedman . In the meantime, he even had to give his shirt number to the new signing Jussi Jääskeläinen and only found his way back to the team in January 2013, after not having played in a competitive game for the professional team for 16 months. After he was previously in a reserve team game, he made his comeback on January 15, 2013 in the third-round replay against AFC Sunderland in the 2012/13 FA Cup , when he played from the 74th minute as a substitute for Josh Vela . After another brief appearance in the fourth round against Everton and further appearances in the reserve, Stuart Holden sat for the first time in a league game of the Wanderers on the bench without being used on February 19, 2013.

After he was back in a championship game a week later in the league game after that, a 1-0 home win over Peterborough United , when he replaced the former English junior international Mark Davies from the 24th minute , he sat in the following four league games again without use on the bench and was on March 28 for a month, until April 24, 2013, loaned to league rivals Sheffield Wednesday to collect practice there and replace the injured Michail Antonio . But even in Sheffield Holden could not establish himself as a regular player and was used in only four of the seven league games on loan, but he was not in any of the full playing time on the lawn. After his return he came in the penultimate game of the season on one minute and sat in the following last league game on May 4, 2013 again without use on the bench of the table sixth. His club comeback did not go unnoticed in the United States either, which is why he was called up by the now head coach Jürgen Klinsmann of the US national team for friendly matches against Belgium and Germany in late May and early June 2013.

In the national team he was on his way to becoming a regular player again and made it to the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013, among other things . In the 1-0 final victory over Panama on July 28, 2013, he suffered another injury, a renewed tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, but this time in the right knee, whereupon he had to pause for months again. After the Bolton Wanderers extended his contract, which expired in 2013, for another year and he returned to team training after seven months, but was not considered by Dougie Freedman, who was still the team's coach, it was another month before he made his comeback in a game of the reserve team against the reserves of Everton. However, this ended after 23 completed minutes, as he could not continue playing due to persistent knee pain and was replaced. O An investigation showed that another operation was inevitable and that he had to be absent from the game for another six to nine months. Although his contract with the Wanderers was not extended, he was still entitled to continue his rehabilitation with the club; He was also eligible to play for any friendlies, as well as for the U-21 and Development Squad.

End of career at 30

Subsequently married Holden, who once considered one of the best midfielders of his country and worthy successor to Landon Donovan was considered, his longtime girlfriend, worked as an expert and analyst at the on NBC transferred Premier League -Play and continued to work on the continuation of his active football career. He was then invited by Jürgen Klinsmann in January 2016 as a guest player to a training camp for the US national team in Carson , California , after spending the rest of the winter with various MLS players such as Benny Feilhaber , Dom Dwyer , Sacha Klještan , Servando Carrasco , AJ DeLaGarza , Hector Jiménez or Steve Birnbaum had trained. Up to this point, he had not considered retiring early. After two years of injury or only a few missions in the last five years and the father of a daughter two days earlier, he announced his official career end as an active player on February 3, 2016.

National team career

About the U-20 and the Olympic team in the A-squad

Holden gained his first international experience with the US U-20 team, for which he scored two goals in eleven international matches. He was also from 2007 to 2008 in the squad of the United States U-23 national team and came here to seven games and one goal. With the U-23 team he represented the USA during the soccer tournament of the 2008 Olympic Games and scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Japan on August 7th. Nevertheless, the team only reached the third of four places in their group. On June 25, 2009, Holden was appointed for the first time in the squad of the US national team on the occasion of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 . On July 4, he made his A-team debut in the group stage ( Group B ) at the game against Grenada . In the same game, Holden headed the 31st minute to give his team a 2-0 lead. After further missions, the US national team reached the final of the tournament , where the Mexican national team lost 5-0. At the end of the competition, Stuart Holden was voted into the "All-Tournament Team" alongside his compatriots Kenny Cooper , Chad Marshall and Clarence Goodson .

Breakthrough as a national player and participation in the World Cup

Stuart Holden as a national player in a warm-up jersey (2013)

In his first year as a senior international, he made it to eleven appearances, which was an extraordinary achievement as there was only one player ( Jonathan Bornstein ) in the past who made more international appearances in his debut year (12 appearances in 2007). came. On March 3, 2010, a week after his league debut in England, he suffered a broken fibula during a friendly international match against the Netherlands after a kick by Nigel de Jong on his right leg and was out for almost three months. On May 26, 2010 he returned to the national team when he was in a World Cup preparatory game against the Czech Republic for the entire game. He was one of the best players on the pitch when the Americans lost 4-2. In May 2010 the national coach of the USA, Bob Bradley , nominated the England legionnaire in the provisional 30-man squad that is to take part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . On May 26, 2010, he appointed Holden to the final 23-man roster in the United States . After another appearance in the 2-1 win in the preparatory game against Turkey , he traveled with the team to South Africa for the World Cup finals. There he came in the first group game of the US, a 1-1 draw against England , for a short stint when he came on the pitch in the 86th minute for Jozy Altidore . The midfielder spent the remaining three games until he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Ghana on the bench without any further use.

Return to the national team

After he was called up by Bradley at the end of September in the 20-man squad for two friendlies against Poland and Colombia , against Brazil he was not present in August, he was used in both games and played in the 2-2 draw against Poland the preparatory work for Oguchi Onyewu's goal for a 2-1 lead. After Bradley had nominated him for further friendlies, but he was injured in the process, another committed midfielder had to go to the start with Eric Lichaj instead of Stuart Holden. Subsequently, he was not considered, mainly because of his injuries; not even after Jürgen Klinsmann took office in July 2011. It was not until May 2013, around two and a half years after his last international appearance, that Klinsmann, who had been in contact with Holden since taking office as US coach, brought him back to the US national team .

In the following two months he embarked on an ongoing winning streak with the Soccer Boys . After the team lost 4-2 in his comeback game against Belgium , when he came on the pitch for Sacha Klještan in the last minutes of the game , the Americans won the following twelve internationals, with Stu Holden either playing himself in eleven of these games or sat on the bench. After he sat on the bench in the following friendly international match against Germany without any action , Klinsmann brought him into the national team for three CONCACAF qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup . The 1.78-meter-tall man was unable to prove himself, was only on the bench against Jamaica and Honduras and only came in stoppage time for Jozy Altidore in the second of the three games, the 2-0 win over Panama on the field. This was also his first World Cup qualifying appearance since the 2-2 draw against Costa Rica on October 15, 2009.

Gold Cup winner about to end his international career

Although he had only played a few minutes by then, the national coach nominated him for the 23-man squad that took part in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup . After he contributed an assist to the 6-0 victory in a friendly international match against Guatemala one day before the start of the tournament , when he was used over half time, he started with the team in a successful CONCACAF Gold Cup. With the exception of the quarter-final against El Salvador , when he was sitting on the substitute bench without a call, Stu Holden was used in all of his team's games, sometimes even for the full duration of the game. In the first group game against Belize , a 6-1 win, he also contributed a goal. In the 1-0 final victory over Panama on July 28, 2013, Holden again suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, but this time in his right knee, whereupon he had to pause for months and then no longer found his way into the national team. It was not until the beginning of 2016 that he was allowed to train as a guest player with the US national team under Klinsmann, before he announced his official end of career shortly afterwards.
