Benny Feilhaber (born January 19, 1985 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is an American football player of Brazilian - Austrian origin who is under contract in Major League Soccer at Sporting Kansas City .

biography

Feilhaber had lived in Brazil until he was seven years old before moving to the United States . There he spent the next eight years in Scarsdale, a suburb of New York City , where he played for the local team Scarsdale Lightning . In 1996 he won the New York State Cup with the team .

In 1999 he moved to Irvine, California , where he played for the Northwood High School school team . He was also active for the local club Irvine Strikers , with whom he won various titles. In 2003 he went to the University of California in Los Angeles and played for the UCLA Bruins .

Due to the origin of his grandfather (a Jewish refugee from Austria), he also has an Austrian passport.

Career

Hamburger SV

The midfielder came to Hamburger SV from the Bruins in July 2005 ; HSV had discovered him while serving for the United States' U-20 national team at the Maccabiade in Israel . He made his Bundesliga debut on October 14, 2006 (7th matchday) when he lost 2-1 at home to FC Schalke 04 when he came on for Nigel de Jong at halftime . Until the summer of 2007 he played both for the HSV A-team and for the second team in the Regionalliga Nord .

Derby County

From August 10, 2007 Feilhaber was eligible to play for Derby County in the English Premier League . He made his debut on September 17, 2007 (6th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Newcastle United, when he came on in the 80th minute for Kenny Miller . After the release of Billy Davies , he came under the new coach Paul Jewell only a few league appearances. At the end of the season, Feilhaber was released to allow him a transfer free of charge.

AGF

In August 2008, Feilhaber moved to the Danish first division club Aarhus GF . There he made his first appearance on September 1, 2008 against FC Nordsjælland . On July 27, 2009, he scored his first goal for the club and was named “Player of the Game”. In the spring of 2010, Feilhaber was injured and then returned to his role as a player only moderately. With the team he rose to the 1st division , the second Danish division.

New England Revolution

Feilhaber moved to Major League Soccer for New England Revolution in April 2011 . Before that, CD Chivas USA and Philadelphia Union had rejected the right to sign Feilhaber.

Sporting Kansas City

In December 2012, Feilhaber moved to Sporting Kansas City , with whom he won the MLS Cup in 2013. In the final, won 7: 6 on penalties , he converted his penalty kick to 3: 1.

Los Angeles FC

After 180 games and 33 goals for the Missouri team, Feilhaber joined league rivals Los Angeles FC on January 4, 2018 .

National team

With the U-20 national team of the United States , Benny Feilhaber took part in the 2005 World Junior Championship in the Netherlands . There he was voted one of the 14 “discoveries of the tournament” by the FIFA judges.

In November 2006 he was asked by the Austrian co-national coach Andreas Herzog to play for Austria's senior national team. Feilhaber declined on the grounds that he would rather play for the US team.

For the US national team he was appointed to the squad of the friendly matches against the selection of Scotland (November 12, 2005) and Germany (March 22, 2006), but not used in the games. He played his first international game on March 25, 2007 against the selection of Ecuador and the first goal he scored against the selection of China on June 2, 2007. In the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2007 in the USA he scored the decisive goal against the selection of Mexico 2: 1, which meant the fourth triumph for his team in this competition.

Together with the US U-23 team , he took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics. A year later he was part of the senior squad for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup . Here he reached the final with the team.

Feilhaber was also part of the US squad that competed in the 2010 World Cup . He completed three missions, each as a substitute.
