Douglas "Dougie" Freedman (born May 25, 1974 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach . Between 2001 and 2002 he played two internationals (one goal) for the Scottish national team .

Player career

Barnet FC and Crystal Palace

After Freedman did not receive any first-team time at the Queens Park Rangers , he moved to the English fourth division club Barnet in 1994 . In Barnet he quickly made a name for himself as an accurate attacker and scored 24 league goals by the end of the season. On September 8, 1995, the second division Crystal Palace committed him . The 21-year-old Freedman (20 league goals) was also able to prove his accuracy and proof two leagues higher and moved into the 1995/96 play-offs of the Football League First Division with Palace as third in the table . In the final, however, the club lost to Leicester City 2-1 and thus missed promotion to the Premier League. In the following season Freedman (eleven league goals) reached with his team by a 1-0 in the play-off final over Sheffield United promotion to the top division. After he did not come into play as hoped in the first half of the Premier League 1997/98 , he moved on October 17, 1997 on loan to the second division Wolverhampton Wanderers .

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest

After two hits in the first two games, the Wolves signed him on October 21, 1997 on a firm contract basis. Freedman scored another nine league goals by the end of the 1997/98 season , but missed promotion to the first division as ninth in the table and therefore joined the second division champions Nottingham Forest .

In the 1998/99 Premier League, however, the promoted team was only rarely able to build on the good performance from the promotion season and was relegated from bottom of the table in the second division. Dougie Freedman scored nine goals in his first full season in the premier division. Under the new coach David Platt , Forest clearly missed promotion in 1999/2000 . Freedman also did not come into its own with nine league goals as hoped.

Crystal Palace and Southend United

In October 2000, Freedman returned to Crystal Palace after three years. With his team from the London borough of Croydon , he reached promotion to the Premier League after four years. Palace was sixth in the play-offs of the Football League First Division 2003/04 and had prevailed after a first-round win over Sunderland AFC in the final with 1-0 against West Ham United . As with Nottingham Forest, his stay in the Premier League was limited to one year in 2004/05 . Freedman, meanwhile, scored only one goal in twenty league games. In the three subsequent seasons in the newly established Football League Championship , he could not find his old accuracy. In March 2008 he moved to third division Leeds United on loan until the end of the season . On September 2, 2008, he signed a contract with Southend United in the third-rate Football League One . After a year and a half in Southend , Freedman terminated his contract early in March 2010 and ended his playing career.

Coaching career

Crystal Palace

In March 2010, Freedman took over the post of assistant coach at Crystal Palace. After the dismissal of coach Paul Hart at the end of the 2009/10 season, he kept this position under the new coach George Burley . After the dismissal of Burley on January 1, 2011 Dougie Freedman initially took over the interim head coach position at the table penultimate. On January 11, 2011, he was officially introduced as the new coach. During the Football League Championship 2010/11 , he and his team narrowly secured relegation. After establishing his team in the lower middle of the table in the 2011/12 season , he led Palace to a promotion place in the first half of the 2012/13 Football League Championship .

Bolton Wanderers

Despite this success, Dougie Freedman decided on October 25, 2012 to move to the Bolton Wanderers . The Premier League relegated team broke up with his coach Owen Coyle on October 9, 2012 , as the team under him had fallen short of expectations. The 2012/13 Football League Championship ended the new coach with his team in seventh place in the table and only missed the play-offs due to the worse goal difference against Leicester City . Due to the good performance of his team in the final stages of the season, Freedman was voted coach of the month in the second division in April 2013. In the following season , the promotion places remained unattainable and the club ended the season only in the middle of the table. A false start in the 2014/15 season and the crash to a relegation zone led to the mutual separation in October 2014.

Nottingham Forest

On February 1, 2015, the second division Nottingham Forest announced the commitment of Freedman as the successor to Stuart Pearce, who had just been released a few hours earlier .
