Jonathan Bornstein (born November 7, 1984 in Torrance , California ) is an American football player who is used as a defender and midfielder .
Youth and college
Bornstein attended Los Alamitos High School in Los Alamitos , California. During his time there he played for the soccer school team. After graduating, he moved to Cal Poly Pomona , where he played college football for two years before moving to the UCLA Bruins in 2004 .
Club career
On January 20, 2006 he was selected by the CD Chivas USA in the MLS SuperDraft in the fourth round. He played by storm while in college, but Chiva's coach Bob Bradley used him as a left-back. He played these first games in this position, but due to injuries during the season he was also temporarily used again in the offensive part of the team. And on June 3, 2006, where he scored his first goal in the game against FC Dallas . Because of his good performance during the season, he received the MLS Rookie of the Year Award. A year later he was even voted into the best team of the season.
During the 2008 season, the then coach Preki put him back in attacking midfield.
In July 2010, the Chivas announced that Bornstein would switch to the UANL Tigres after the 2010 season .
The Portland Timbers secured the rights to Bornstein in their MLS Expansion Draft in November 2010. Should he want to return to the United States before his contract in Mexico expires, the Timbers would hold the rights to him.
National team
Bornstein made his international debut on January 20, 2007 against Denmark. He also scored his first goal for the US national soccer team in that game . He completed his first major tournament in the summer of 2007 at the Copa América .
In 2008 he lost his regular place on the team to Heath Pearce and had to contend with several injuries.
When FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 , he was part of the squad and completed all the group matches, but had later in the tournament on the bench again, when Carlos Bocanegra had recovered from his injury.
After replacing Confederations Cup, Bornstein got his regular place back as a left defender. During the qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2010 scored against Costa Rica a goal. This secured him the qualification for Honduras , where he was then celebrated as a hero.
At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he sat on the bench for the first two group games and was only used in the last game against Algeria. He also played in the round of 16 against Ghana from the start.
Private
Bornstein is of the Jewish faith. His father's ancestors came from Romania and his mother is from Mexico. He took part in the Maccabiade in Israel in 2005 as a member of the US soccer team and in the end received the silver medal with the team.
