Oguchialu "Oguchi" Onyewu (born May 13, 1982 in Washington, DC ) is a former American football player who was most recently under contract with the Philadelphia Union .

Athletic career

Onyewu's parents immigrated to the United States from Nigeria to study at Howard University in Washington (DC). Onyewu, who has two brothers - Uche and Nonye - and two sisters - Chi-Chi and Ogechi - grew up first in Silver Spring and later in Olney , Maryland , where he played soccer at Sherwood High School for two years. He then went to Florida as part of a nationwide U-17 selection program and made his debut for the US U-17 team in 1998 against Guatemala . Just a year later, he took part in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in New Zealand with the same team .

The "Gooch" called, with about 1.93 meters tall defender attended Clemson University in South Carolina after graduating from high school in Sherwood and played college football there for two years. There he developed into one of the best players in his age group and was nominated for the Hermann Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best college player in the USA. In 2001 he took part in the U-20 World Cup in Argentina and caught the attention of international observers.

Club career

In 2002 Onyewu signed a four-year contract with the French first division club FC Metz . There, however, it should take until January of the following year before he was used for the first time in the 1-0 win against Girondins Bordeaux in the French League Cup. After a coach change, Onyewu then played no role in the further plans of the club, so that he was loaned to the Belgian first division club RAA La Louvière in 2003 .

A year later Onyewu was loaned to Standard Liège again to a Belgian club, which after a short time in October 2004 drew the purchase option for the player. Onyewu quickly became an important regular in Liege.

He moved to Newcastle United in England in January 2007. He was initially loaned from Standard Liège until the end of the season. However, Newcastle decided not to continue the loan or not to make the transfer.

From then on, he developed into an important player both in the club and in the international matches. In Belgium he was elected to the team of the season in 2006 and also received the award for best foreign player.

In the summer of 2009 he signed a three-year contract with the Italian club AC Milan . In the 2009/10 season he was used in Milan only in one game in the UEFA Champions League and remained in Serie A without use. He was injured between October 2009 and May 2010.

In the second half of the 2010/11 season he was loaned to FC Twente . Here he was used in eight league games, one cup encounter and five Europa League games. For the 2011/12 season Onyewu moved to Sporting Clube de Portugal in Lisbon, where he signed a three-year contract.

After just one season, Onyewu moved from Sporting on loan to Spanish club Málaga . There he could not fight for a regular place and only played two league games. For the 2013/14 season, the English first division team Queens Park Rangers signed him . Without a single first round use Onyewu decided in January 2014 to move again and went to the second division Sheffield Wednesday . After another short-term engagement at Charlton Athletic , Onyewu was without a club from July 2015. It was only in January 2017 that he was signed by the Philadelphia Union . He then completed 22 major league soccer games. His contract, which expired at the end of the year, was not renewed. After another nine months without a club, Onyewu announced his active career end in September 2018.

National team

In the US national team , he made his debut on October 13, 2004 against Panama .

He won the Gold Cup with the USA in 2005 , scored the decisive header in the semi-finals against Honduras in stoppage time to make it 2-1 and was later voted into the best team of the tournament.

During the qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where Onyewu played regularly, he fought exciting duels with Jared Borgetti , especially against Mexico . After Borgetti scored a goal in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City after Onyewus made a positional error, Onyewu clearly dominated his opponent in the second leg.

After the successful qualification Onyewu was appointed to the squad for the World Cup and was in all three games of the US national team on the field.

In 2007 he won the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the US team for the second time in his career . In 2009 Onyewu reached the final of the Confederations Cup with the US selection , in which they lost 3-2 to Brazil after a 2-0 half-time lead. Onyewu stood out again during the tournament with his good positional play and strong duel behavior.

In 2014 he played his 69th and last international match (6 goals) in the 2-0 defeat in the friendly against Ukraine in Cyprus .
