Martin Tony Waikwa Olsson (born May 17, 1988 in Gävle ) is a Swedish football player . The winger, who can be used on the left in defense but also in midfield, was most recently under contract with Swansea City . His twin brother, Marcus Olsson, is also a professional soccer player. He is the brother-in-law of Dirk Nowitzki .
Career
Young players in Sweden and England
Olsson began playing football in the youth of the Helsingborg district club Högaborgs BK , for whose men's team he competed in the third division 2 in 2005 . His talent aroused the interest of various clubs in European leagues, so that in January 2006 he moved to the youth academy of the Blackburn Rovers .
Parallel to his commitment in Blackburn, the coach of the Swedish U-18 national team, Ulf Svensson , nominated him for the junior national team, in which he was able to establish himself as a regular. As a result, Olsson went through almost all youth national teams and was appointed to the squad for the U-21 European Championship finals in his own country, where he was one of five foreign players on the Swedish team, alongside Marcus Berg , Johan Dahlin , Mikael Lustig and Ola Toivonen .
Breakthrough at Blackburn Rovers
In 2007 moved Olsson in the first team of Rovers on when he was in the qualification of the UEFA Cup his competitive debut in the game against the Finnish representatives Myllykosken Pallo -47 was. After he made his Premier League debut against Derby County in December 2007 , the club's fans voted him Young Player of the Year. Following the 2007/08 season , Olsson signed a new contract that should tie him to the club until the end of the 2011/12 season .
In the following season , however, the Swede did not get beyond the role of the supplementary player and only made nine appearances in the league. This changed from the Premier League 2009/10 season , in which Olsson became a regular player. He scored his first goal for the Rovers in February 2010 . In addition, his spectacular overhead kick in the League Cup against Aston Villa in January 2010 was voted the most beautiful goal of the season by Blackburn Rovers fans. He caused criticism, however, when he brought about the game-winning penalty in the East Lancashire Derby (Blackburn versus Burnley FC ) with a swallow. He fell in a duel with goalkeeper Brian Jensen , but later admitted he hadn't been touched.
In May 2010, Olsson made his debut in the senior national team of Sweden in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina , where he was able to contribute two goals to the 4-2 success. In the summer, he also extended his existing contract prematurely by five years. Olsson has since developed into an integral part of the team and played a large part of the games, not least because teammate Gaël Givet was getting on in years as a rival in the left-back position. At the same time, he established himself in the squad of the selection team, although in some cases he was only nominated as a substitute.
At the end of the 2011/12 season he was relegated with the Blackburn Rovers from the Premier League, the club occupied the penultimate place in the table. Nevertheless, he was promoted to a regular on the defensive of the Swedish national team, at the European Championships in 2012 he formed the Swedish defensive line with Olof Mellberg , Andreas Granqvist and Mikael Lustig or, after a change from national coach Erik Hamrén with Jonas Olsson, and came up in all three group games Commitment. After relegation he remained loyal to the club and competed with him in the second-rate Football League Championship . There the team missed as table-17. clearly the ascent.
Move to Norwich City
In July 2013, Olsson moved back to the Premier League and joined Norwich City , where he signed a four-year deal. Here too he had to accept relegation to the second division at the end of the season. With Norwich he rose again to the Premier League in 2014/15 and again from a year later. In January 2017, Olsson moved to Swansea City for £ 4million .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into Sweden's squad and was a member of the team. He played all three preliminary round games over the full season. The team then retired as bottom of the group.
