Career

Breakthrough in Sweden

Toivonen is of Finnish descent. Toivonen played at Degerfors IF when he was young . In 2005 he made his first appearance in a Swedish youth team. In the following years he established himself in the youth teams and in 2005 made the leap into the men's team of his home club, which played in the Superettan . In the second division season in 2005 he came to 27 league games in which he scored five goals. That is why the Allsvenskan became aware of him and in winter 2006 he left Degerfors IF.

Toivonen's new club became Örgryte IS . As a regular player, he scored six of the 24 goals this season and rose with the club as bottom of the table. While on the one hand the club did not succeed, he was able to play in the Swedish U-21 selection . After he had only sat on the bench in several games, he ran on November 14, 2006 for the first time for the national team and scored a goal in the 2-4 defeat against the French U-21 team . After relegation, he left the club to continue playing first class.

Before joining his new club Malmö FF in the 2007 season started, coach let him Lars Lagerback in the Swedish national team debuts. In the 2-0 defeat against Venezuela on January 14, 2007 of the year he wore the shirt with the number 10 and was replaced after 60 minutes of play by Rade Prica . After another international match, he was only used in the U-21 team in the following years.

Toivonen established himself as a regular in the club team. With MFF he reached ninth place in the Allsvenskan and scored three goals. In the following season he made his breakthrough. Although he missed the European Cup with the club as sixth in the table again , he scored 14 goals and prepared another seven goals. He drew international attention to himself and clubs like West Ham United expressed interest in a commitment.

Via the Netherlands into Ligue 1

Toivonen finally moved to PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie in January 2009 . After making his league debut against NAC Breda on January 24, he signed the scorers list on his second appearance, a 3-0 away win at De Graafschap alongside double scorer Ibrahim Afellay . As a regular player, he made 14 league appearances by the end of the season and scored six goals this season in the list of the five best internal scorers behind Afellay, Balázs Dzsudzsák , Danny Koevermans and Danko Lazović . At the same time, he was still appointed to the Swedish U-21 national team; At the end of May 2009, coaches Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson nominated him for the U-21 European Championship finals in Sweden in the summer. There he contributed with three goals in four games to reach the semi-finals, in which the team was eliminated, and was second best scorer of the selection in the course of the tournament behind Marcus Berg .

In the 2009/10 senior division season following the tournament , Toivonen was a regular scorer; He scored four goals in the 5-1 away win at ADO Den Haag in November alone . In the course of the year he returned to the senior national team. By the end of the season he scored 13 goals in the championship, as the club's best internal goalscorer, he led the club as third in the table in the European Cup. There he was also successful in the play-off round of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League against FK Sibir Novosibirsk , when the team made up for the first leg defeat with a 5-0 second leg win and reached the group stage. While he distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer in the championship - with 15 goals this season he was again the most accurate striker of his club at the end of the season - he made the quarter-finals with the team in the European Cup. There, a thigh injury slowed him down, which made a game against Benfica Lisbon impossible. With a 1: 4 defeat in the first leg and a 2: 2 in the second leg, the team was eliminated without him. However, he qualified again for the Europa League via another third place in the table. In the winter break of the 2013/14 season he left Eindhoven after five years and moved to Ligue 1 club Stade Rennes .

Toivonen was similarly successful with the national team. In qualifying for the European Championship in 2012 , he had established himself in the national team and was used regularly. Behind the Dutch selection , he finished second in qualifying group E. Shortly afterwards, he extended his contract with PSV Eindhoven until the summer of 2014. In the 2011/12 season, he formed with the Slovenian Tim Matavž , who joined the team at the end of the transfer period in August the club's successful storm duo. While he convinced again with 18 goals this season and placed sixth on the Eredivisie's goalscorer list, he again finished third in the table with his club. Shortly after the end of the season, national coach Erik Hamrén appointed him to his 23-player squad for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, where he was one of 20 players active abroad.

Small detour to England and return to France

On August 28, 2015 he was awarded to the English Premier League for AFC Sunderland . There he met not only his former PSV coach Dick Advocaat , but also his compatriot Sebastian Larsson . Even after a coach change to Sam Allardyce in October, he was still used regularly until the turn of the year, but after the winter transfer period he moved permanently to the second tier and played in the 2-1 home win over Manchester United in February, when he was a substitute for Lee Cattermole was on the pitch for the last five minutes, the last of his 14 competitive games for the club. He had played twelve times in the championship, in the 1: 4 defeat against Manchester City in the third round of the League Cup 2015/16 , he scored his only goal for the first team with the consolation goal at the final score. For the reserve team he appeared twice in 2016, scoring two goals. Although he had stayed with the national team over the course of time, he ultimately did not make it into the final Swedish squad for the European Championship finals in 2016 , in which the Swedes did not win and were eliminated early in the group.

At the beginning of August 2016, Toivonen moved to Toulouse FC , where he signed a three-year contract. Three weeks later, the club signed another Swede, Jimmy Durmaz . At his new club, Toivonen fluctuated between starting eleven and substitute bench, in the end he was only on the field in 19 of his 35 season appearances in the 2016/17 season at the start of the game. Nevertheless, he returned to the national team during the season, and he also scored seven goals this season. He managed a hat-trick against FC Lorient in December 2016 when he scored all three of his club's goals in a 3-2 home win. In the following season, in the fall of 2017 in the play-off games against Italy Toivonen in the successful qualification for the 2018 World Cup after a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw in the second leg, he remained at club level without scoring. On the one hand, he was unable to establish himself as a regular player, on the other hand, the club slipped to a relegation place. He played both games won against AC Ajaccio , but in the 3-0 away win in the first leg he was only substituted after the final score had been achieved. Despite the goallessness, national coach Janne Andersson held on to him and appointed him to the squad for the upcoming World Cup in June 2018.
