Gert Andreas Alm (born June 19, 1973 in Gällivare ) is a former Swedish football player . The striker and midfielder , who began a coaching career after his active career, worked as a journalist and football coach after his career ended . In 2009 he won the Swedish championship title as assistant coach with AIK , two years later he took over the club as head coach.

Career

Career start

Alm started playing soccer at IK City in Eskilstuna. In 1989 he moved up to the squad of the men's team, with which he rose to the third division. Until 1994 he ran for the club in the third division Division 2 Västra Svealand before moving to Stockholm.

Alm signed on with the Stockholm club Hammarby IF in Allsvenskan . During the first division season in 1995 he was used in eleven games for the club, despite a goal he had to relegate the team to the second division. There he missed with her as second in the northern season behind Västerås SK the direct promotion and had to compete in the relegation games against Trelleborgs FF . After a 2-1 home win, a 1: 3 away defeat in the second leg meant staying in the second division. In the following season he received only two season defeats with the team and managed to return to the Swedish elite series.

In Norway and return to Sweden

Alm had piqued the interest of the Norwegian club Kongsvinger IL . Instead of chasing goals for Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan, he switched to the Tippeligaen . When he made his debut on the first day of the 1998 season , he entered the scorers list. At the side of Sven Erik Sætre , Julian Johnsson , Ludwig Ernstsson and Jon Inge Høiland , he contributed with six goals this season to reach the relegation place. There he reached with the team after a 2-2 draw and a 5-0 win against Kjelsås IL relegation. In his sophomore year with the club, he distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer, scoring ten goals this season. Nevertheless, he missed relegation with the team after only six wins this season as the bottom of the table in the 1999 season.

Alm then returned to Sweden and signed a contract with AIK . Under coach Stuart Baxter he was initially used in midfield. After he was initially unable to convince there and temporarily found himself on the bench, the coach set him up as a striker. As a result, he advanced to the club's best internal goalscorer with nine goals this season and reached third place in the table with the club in the 2000 season .

Alm was injured on the last day of the match and was out until the summer of the following year due to the persistent injury. After his return to the field, he again proved to be a dangerous goal player and support for the team, which is now supported by Olle Nordin . In nine appearances he scored seven goals by the end of the season. After a cartilage damage in his knee, he missed almost the entire season of 2002 , only a short assignment as a substitute in the league and in the cup was granted to him. When he played in the semi-final match against IF Elfsborg , he scored the decisive goal, but in the cup final, which he lost to local rivals Djurgårdens IF , he was only left with the role of the spectator.

Under coach Richard Money , who was signed up in spring 2003 , Alm returned to the team, but was unable to match the form of the old days. He then left the club in August of that year and moved to the second division IFK Norrköping in the Superettan . With last year's relegated team, he finished ninth in the first season. With fourteen goals this season he led the club back to the promotion places in the second division season in 2004 , but as fourth in the table, the relegation place was missed with four points behind Assyriska Föreningen . After nine goals in 28 games, he ended his professional career after the 2005 season and returned to the amateur field.

Career end and work as a trainer

Alm competed for his old club IK City, which had meanwhile been renamed Eskilstuna City. After two years for the club in the fourth division, he finally ended his active career in 2007. In the 2008 season he took over as coach of the club, which he led to second place in the division 2 Östra Sveland . He missed promotion to Division 1 only because of the poorer goal difference compared to the same point competitor Karlslunds IF .

In parallel to his amateur career, Alm began to work as a journalist. He appeared as a football expert at TV4 , but also commented on the events for Svenska Fotbollförbundet, especially in the Superettan on the association's website.

In autumn 2008, his former club AIK announced the engagement of Alms as assistant coach to the newly signed Mikael Stahre after Nebojša Novaković , assistant to Stahre's predecessor Rikard Norling , resigned from his position. At the end of the first division season in 2009 he succeeded with the team winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish championship title, when the direct competitor IFK Göteborg was defeated away on the last day of the game . After AIK was in danger of relegation in the 2010 season , the club had two coaches, Björn Wesström and Alex Miller, after separating from Stahre in the spring. After Miller's resignation at the end of the season, the club tried to find various coaches before presenting Alm in mid-December 2010 as the new head coach and Nebojša Novaković and Christer Swärd as his assistants.

Alm managed the fortunes of AIK until spring 2016. Under his leadership, the club established itself permanently in the top third of the table, in the 2011 and 2013 seasons the team was runner-up behind Helsingborgs IF and Malmö FF respectively. The worst place was the fourth place in the table in the 2012 season , which was associated with not taking part in a European competition . After a mediocre start to the season, he was released from his duties at AIK a few days after the eighth match day of the 2016 season, ranking ninth despite a 3-2 away win at Gothenburg club BK Häcken . Only a few hours after the announcement of the resignation, the association presented a successor, Rikard Norling .

In July 2016, the Danish club Vejle presented BK Alm as a new coach who signed a two-year contract to help shape a change in the traditional second division after a change in ownership and to build a powerful team. After reaching ninth place in the table, however, the coach and club agreed on an early separation in the summer of 2017.

In December 2017, Alm announced his return to the Allsvenskan when he signed a three-year contract with the Swedish first division club BK Häcken , valid from January of the following year .
