The ivory thistle ( Ptilostemon afer ) is a species of the genus ivory thistle ( Ptilostemon ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

description

The ivory thistle is a biennial to perennial hapaxanthe plant that reaches heights of 40 to 120 centimeters. The outline of the basal leaves is narrowly lanceolate. They are arranged in a radial rosette, up to 30 (40) centimeters long and deeply pinnate. The sections are finger-shaped, three to six parts, strongly thorn-pointed, balding on the top and white wool on the underside. The main nerves are broad and ivory white. The cup-shaped inflorescences are stalked and arranged in loose umbelliferous whole inflorescences .

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

Occurrence

The ivory thistle occurs on the Balkan Peninsula with Bulgaria and Romania and in Central and Eastern Turkey on stony, rocky or clayey mountain slopes, on scree and in dry river valleys at altitudes of 600 to 2450 meters.

Systematics

Two subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Ptilostemon afer (Jacq.) Greuter subsp. afer : It occurs on the Balkan Peninsula but not in Turkey.
  • Ptilostemon afer subsp. eburneus Greuter : It occurs in Turkey.

use

The ivory thistle is used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens and perennial beds. It has been in culture since 1800 at the latest.
