Pontus Jansson (born February 13, 1991 in Arlöv ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who won two championships in his home country with Malmö FF , has played in Sweden, Italy and England in his career so far. After the defensive player, who was mainly used as a central defender, played for several junior selections of Svenska Fotbollförbundet , he made his debut in the Swedish national team in 2012 . With the selection, he took part in the 2016 European Championship finals and the 2018 World Championship tournament, but was unable to establish himself as a regular in the Swedish national team during and between the finals.

Career

Career start in Sweden with championship titles

Jansson started playing football in his hometown at Arlövs BI . In 2007 he moved to the junior division of the Malmö FF professional club . There he went through the individual youth teams and played his way into the junior national teams of Svenska Fotbollförbundet . In the spring of 2009, the club briefly awarded him to the lower-class local rivals IFK Malmö . He then moved up to the professional squad at his home club, and in August of that year he finally signed a professional contract valid until 2014. In autumn he played his first two professional games as a substitute in the first division season 2009 .

In the 2010 season Jansson was in 18 of the 30 season games on the side of Ulrich Vinzents , Agon Mehmeti , Daniel Larsson and Guillermo Molins on the field, the team supervised by Roland Nilsson won the championship title at the end of the season. In the subsequent Allsvenskan season, Jansson could not fight for his regular place permanently, but was a regular in the Swedish U-21 team . With that, he had made his way to the senior national team at the end of the season and in mid-December was appointed by national coach Erik Hamrén along with several other newcomers and his Malmö team- mates Jiloan Hamad , Ivo Pękalski , Johan Dahlin , Mathias Ranégie and Jimmy Durmaz for a January tour to Qatar. In the 2-0 win over Bahrain with goals from Tobias Hysén and Oscar Hiljemark , he made his debut on January 18, 2012 in the jersey of the national team. With good performances during the year - as a regular player, he stood in all 30 games of the season for his club on the field and reached the Under-21 team, the qualifying play-offs for the U21 European Championship in 2013 , where, however, Italy's junior selection with won two victories - he stayed in the extended squad and was considered again the following year. In the following 2013 season he was also a regular player in central defense for a long time, at the end of the season he won the Swedish championship title for the second time in his career.

Change abroad

In spring 2014, the Italian club FC Turin signed Jansson, who signed a contract valid from July. The first two years in Serie A were overshadowed by knee problems that had already occurred at Malmö FF, which - in addition to the switch to a different level - meant that he only appeared irregularly for the multiple Italian champion. In the end of the season of the 2015/16 season he was used more often and played his way back into the focus of the national team. In mid-May, national coach Hamrén nominated him a year and a half after his last appointment in November 2014 for Sweden's squad for the European Championship in France . During the tournament he was not used.

After the summer break, Jansson joined the English club Leeds United in the second-rate EFL Championship on loan until the end of the season , who also agreed a purchase option with the previous Italian employer Janssons. After his debut on the sixth match day of the 2016/17 season , he quickly became a regular player, scoring three goals in 34 games this season, but also receiving 14 cautions. Nevertheless, the central defender was named second division player of the month for December 2016 and was voted into the team of the year. As seventh in the table, the team missed the promotion games to the Premier League with five points behind Fulham FC .

Jansson had already signed a permanent contract with Leeds United in February 2017 when he signed a three-year contract. After he knew how to convince at the beginning of the following season, the club extended his contract in October until the summer of 2022. Ultimately, he played 42 championship games over the course of the season, but ended the season with the club in 13th place lying clearly removed from the ranks of the ascent. Nevertheless, he was still a regular part of the national team, but was mostly on the bench there. After he had been out of action since June 2017, on March 27, 2018, he led the selection in the final 0: 1 comparison with Romania as team captain. In June he was finally part of Sweden's squad for the World Cup in Russia . In the opening game against South Korea , which was successfully designed with a 1-0 win , he represented the ailing Victor Lindelöf in central defense at the side of team captain Andreas Granqvist , but moved back to the second line after his recovery.
