Player career

society

Pétur was in the youth department of Íþróttabandalag Akraness until 1976 . In 1976/1977 he joined the first team of his home club. There he quickly became a regular player and convinced with good performances. In his first season he was able to win the national championship title of the highest Icelandic league with the Skagamenn . His achievements did not go unnoticed by the European mainland teams, and so there was a move to the Dutch Eredivisie , to Feyenoord Rotterdam , in the summer of 1978 . In his first season he was the only foreigner in the Rotterdam team alongside the Czech coach Václav Ježek . In 1980 he won the KNVB Cup with the Red-Whites . Although he played regularly there in three years and scored goals, he was allowed to move to RSC Anderlecht in Belgium for the summer transfer period of 1981 , where he was runner-up at the end of the season. But after only one year there, Pétur joined league rivals Royal Antwerp , where he stayed for two years before returning to Feyenoord for another year. Then Pétur said goodbye to Spain, to the then second division club Hércules CF , where he stayed until 1987 with a short break. Then he moved back to the home island and KR Reykjavík secured the services of the striker. After four years with the capital city club, he ended his active professional career in 1991.

National team

Pétur made his debut for the Icelandic national team in 1978. By 1990, he ran 41 times for his home country, scoring eleven goals. He played his last game in September 1990 against France . He was never able to qualify for a world or European championship with his team.

Coaching career

Shortly after his playing career, Pétur hit that of the coach. In 1994 he took over Keflavík ÍF , but stayed there for only one year. After a long break, he was in charge of KR Reykjavík from 2000 , for which he had already played as a player. After two years, this relationship was also separated again. Since 2007 he has assisted Ólafur Davíð Jóhannesson , who is the head coach of the Icelandic national team .
