Career

Bent Martin was born in Sønderborg in February 1943 when Denmark was under German occupation during World War II . He began his career in the 1950s in his birthplace at Sønderborg BK . From there he moved to Aarhus GF with whom he won the Danish Cup in 1965. As the winner of the national cup, he and his club took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season , and met Celtic Glasgow in the round of 16 . Against the Scots, the young goalkeeper drew attention to himself with coach Jock Stein and his assistant coach Sean Fallon with two good performances in the two legs. In December 1965, Fallon flew to Denmark to negotiate a contract. In February 1966, Martin finally switched to Celtic . In October 1966, the goalkeeper came for Celtic to a competitive game in the Glasgow Cup against FC Queen's Park . At the Bhoys he was only the third goalkeeper behind Ronnie Simpson and John Fallon . In December 1966, Martin moved to league rivals Dunfermline Athletic for a transfer fee of £ 3,500. Greatest success with the Pars from Dunfermline was the victory in the Scottish Cup against Heart of Midlothian in 1968 . After his time in Scotland he was under contract with SK Rapid Vienna in the 1970/71 season and played 9 league games. In addition, he was in goal when Rapid lost to Austria in extra time in the final of the Austrian Cup . He was next to his teammate Jørn Bjerregaard one of two Danes in the final. After just one season he moved back to Denmark to Aarhus GF. Here he later ended his career.
