The Estádio Serra Dourada is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Goiânia , Goiás state . It has space for 41,574 spectators and serves as the home of the clubs Goiás EC , Atlético Goianiense and Vila Nova FC . The name of the stadium refers to the mountains in the north-west of Goiás, the Serra Dourada .
history
The Estádio Serra Dourada in Goiânia, the capital of the Brazilian state of Goiás in the interior of the country, is located in the Jardim Goiás district . It was completed in 1975 and opened on March 9th that year. For the first game in the new stadium, a selection of Goiás and the Portuguese national football team met for a friendly game, which Goiás won 2-1. 79,610 spectators came to this game at the Estádio Serra Dourada, which is still the attendance record today.
Since 1975 the stadium has been used by the three major Goiânia clubs as a venue for home games. However, Goiás EC , Atlético Goianiense and Vila Nova FC have their own smaller stadiums, so they only switch to the Estádio Serra Dourada for games where a larger crowd is expected. These three clubs have not yet won a title, but at least the Estádio Serra Dourada hosted the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana in 2010 . The first leg was won 2-0 by Goiás EC in Goiânia against the Argentine representative CA Independiente from Avellaneda , but in the second leg they lost 3-1 at the Estadio Libertadores de América and then 5-3 on penalties. The greatest successes of the Goiânia teams are some titles in the Goiás state championship , which each of the three clubs has won at least 11 times. Atlético Goianiense currently plays in Série A , Goiás EC in Série B and Villa Nova FC also in the second highest division.
The Estádio Serra Dourada in Goiânia was a venue for the 1989 Copa America . The stadium was the smallest of the four stadiums with a spectator capacity of 22,000, but ten games still took place in the stadium. The other stadiums at this tournament were the 145,000-seat Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro , the 60,000-seat Estádio do Arruda in Recife and the Estádio Fonte Nova in Salvador da Bahía , which has a capacity of 30,000 . The low capacity of 22,000 seats at the time of the Copa América is due to the fact that only seats are allowed for international competitions and there was still a lot of standing room in the Estádio Serra Dourada at that time.
