The Serra Dourada (German about: Gold Mountains ) is a mountain range in the northwest of the Brazilian state of Goiás . In this area it forms the western end of the Brazilian mountainous region and borders the Araguaia plain to the west with a height of 200 to 500 m.

geography

The Serra Dourada forms the watershed between the Rio Araguaia basin and the eastern Rio Tocantins basin . In the north it begins west of the Serra da Mesa reservoir and south of Mara Rosa and runs from there to the southwest to the former capital Goiás Velho , from where it extends in its western foothills to the village of Serra Dourada in the municipality of Fazenda Nova . This spur, about 60 km long, forms part of the watershed between the Rio Araguaia Basin in the north and the Rio Paraná Basin in the south . The total length of the Serra Dourada is approx. 275 km and the highest peaks are located south of Pilar de Goiás with 1071 m and south of Goiás Velho with 1056 m.

The Serra Dourada runs along the border between the mesoregions of Northwest Goiás and the northwestern border of Central Goiás and, in the north, partly to the mesoregion of North Goiás .

history

The first gold was mined in the Serra Dourada by the Bandeirante Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva on the Rio Vermelho in Buenolândia in the vicinity of Goiás Velho. Gold is still won around the Serra Dourada, especially in Crixás and Fazenda Nova.

Serra Dourada rivers

In the east, the northeast flowing Rio das Almas runs along the Serra Dourada into the Serra da Mesa reservoir , which itself does not arise in the Serra Dourada. The Rio Araguaia tributaries, Rio Vermelho, Rio do Peixe and Rio Crixás-Açu , as well as many of their tributaries, arise on the western slope .

Protected area

The Parque Estadual da Serra Dourada nature reserve is located in the southwest of the municipality of Goiás Velho .
