The Estádio Governador João Castelo is a multifunctional stadium in the Brazilian city of São Luís . It has space for 75,263 spectators and serves as the home of the Sampaio Corrêa FC club .

history

The Estádio Governador João Castelo was built in 1982 and opened on February 5th of the same year. For the first game in the new stadium, the Brazilian national soccer team and the Portuguese national soccer team met for a friendly game that ended 3-1 for the Brazilians. The first goal at Estádio Governador João Castelo was scored by the Brazilian player Junior . Since 1982, the Estádio Governador João Castelo has served as a venue for the three most important football clubs from São Luís , the capital and with almost one million inhabitants also the largest city in the Brazilian state of Maranhão in the north-east of the country, Maranhão AC , Moto Club de São Luís and Sampaio Corrêa FC for home games. However, these three clubs have their own stadium, and they rarely switch to the Estádio Governador João Castelo. The most successful of these clubs is Sampaio Corrêa FC, which has even spent a few seasons in the top Brazilian soccer league, the Série A , and has a large number of national championship titles.

The Estádio Governador João Castelo is also known as Castelão , although it could easily be confused with the Estádio Plácido Aderaldo Castelo in Fortaleza , which also has this nickname. It is named after João Castelo Ribeiro Gonçalves, governor of the state of Maranhão from 1979 to 1982. The São Luís stadium now has a capacity of 75,263 spectators. The spectator record in the stadium was set when on September 24, 1998 in the context of the Copa Conmebol 1998 Sampaio Corrêa FC met FC Santos , lost 5-1 and 95,720 spectators were present. This game replaced the local derby between Sampaio Corrêa and Moto Club, which attracted 95,000 onlookers in 1987 when Moto Club won 3-1.
