The Rionegro Airport ( Spanish officially Aeropuerto Internacional José María Córdova , or Rionegro Airport , IATA code : MDE , ICAO code : SKRG ) is a Colombian passenger airport and the main city of Medellin and Antioquia Department . It is Colombia's second largest airport and is located in the municipality of Rionegro , just under an hour (40 km) from the center of Medellín by car.

In the center of Medellín there is also a national airport, Olaya Herrera Airport. The international airport was named after the Colombian general José María Córdova from Rionegro .

meaning

Rionegro Airport is the most important airport in the Antioquia department and, in terms of infrastructure, it is the most indispensable in western Colombia. It is an important aviation hub for the low-cost airline Viva Air Colombia . It serves several international destinations, one of the busiest is the connection to Miami International Airport . Bogotá – Rionegro is the most flown route in Colombia, which is mainly used by Avianca , Copa Airlines , Viva Colombia and LATAM Airlines Colombia . Avianca also flies direct to Madrid three times a week. There are also new destinations in South and Central America and the Caribbean.

Expansion of the airport

The need to expand the airport only recently arose after the peace agreement between the government and the FARC-EP took effect and more and more tourists were pouring into the country, especially Medellín. The Aeronáutica Civil published study results on technical, operational and financial sustainability of implementation of the expansion. According to this plan, after the expected growth in air traffic between 2038 and 2040, the construction of another runway of 3,500 meters in length and a new passenger terminal should be completed. In addition, new buildings will be required in several other areas, such as fire fighting, the control tower and the electrical area.

The construction costs are expected to be around 1.2 billion pesos , divided into three phases over the next 20 years. The demand forecasts estimate approximately 13.5 million passengers, 177,000 tons of cargo and 131,000 aircraft movements for the year 2036, according to the report.

In the first phase, between 2016 and 2021, the existing runway is to be extended by 500 meters; in addition, the construction of two additional passenger gates, improvements in the internal processes of the passenger terminal, as well as an expansion of the transport infrastructure with regard to arrivals and departures from the city center to the airport.

Transport links

With the planned opening in July 2019 of the 8.2 kilometer long "East Tunnel", Spanish Túnel de Oriente and a 24 kilometer newly built expressway between Rionegro and the eastern outskirts of Medellín, the previous travel time on the 32 kilometer old extremely winding route of far below 50 minutes to under 20 minutes. The cost of the expressway with nine viaducts, which has been planned for several decades, was approximately USD 303.4 million. The main beneficiaries are the over eight million passengers who use Rionegro Airport each year.

Incidents

  • On May 19, 1993, a Boeing 727-46 of SAM Colombia (HK-2422X) was flown on the way from Panama City to Rionegro Airport 40 km southeast of the city of Medellin in the mountain Paramo Frontino.
